Caniac Coach Gives Lifts to RBC Center

canecoach2This year there is finally a way to ride a shuttle to games at the RBC Center. Pepsi, a few local restaurants, and other sponsors have teamed up to offer the Caniac Coach, a free shuttle bus to all home Hurricanes games, the NHL All-Star Game, major concerts, and select other events.

The shuttle departs from a few area restaurants such as:

  • Spring Rolls (North Hills) - 55 minutes prior to game time,
  • Tir Na Nog (Downtown) - 48 minutes prior to game time,
  • La Volta (Downtown - thanks cecil!) - 52 minutes prior to game time,
  • more?….

Seats are on a first-come, first-server basis, and no purchase is necessary.

Unfortunately there isn’t a good or official website for this service. If you have seen the service being available from anywhere else, please let everyone know in the comments! canecoach1Note: The service now has a website outlining pickup locations and times.

Gogo’s Guide to the NBA

NBA_pass The NBA regular season tips off tomorrow night with three games on the schedule. It also begins a two week preview of the NBA League Pass package on Time Warner Cable. The preview, showing thru November 2, is our chance to see some of our favorite former college players whose teams never get national TV coverage. Teams like Indiana and Cleveland have tons of area players, and this is our chance to watch them. The Pass is on channels 571-581 (SD) and 1581 (HD).

The NBA rosters are an interesting read every year. There are so many surprises in the rolls, including the coaching staffs, I put together a master spreadsheet of all NBA players for readers to enjoy. In order to best utilize the data, log in to your Google account, and then select File | Make a Copy…, and save the spreadsheet into your own nbasheetaccount. Users can then sort the list by Team, Salary, Age, etc. to best comprehend the current rosters.

There are several players from the area in the league. Quin Snyder, Bob Bender, Gene Banks, Chip Engelland, Phil Weber, Nate McMillan, Vinnie Del Negro, Joe Wolf, Bob McAdoo, Pat Sullivan, John Kuester, George Karl, Larry Brown, Dave Hanners, and Phil Ford are all among the coaching ranks. Raleigh natives Chris Wilcox and John Wall are preparing for big seasons as players in the league. Additionally there are also several former local college players in the league, and Duke currently holds the lead. Those players are:

Duke (13)

  • Shane Battier (Houston)
  • Carlos Boozer (Chicago)
  • Elton Brand (Philadelphia)
  • Luol Deng (Chicago)
  • Chris Duhon (Orlando)
  • Mike Dunleavy (Indiana)
  • Gerald Henderson (Charlotte)
  • Grant Hill (Phoenix)
  • Dahntay Jones (Indiana)
  • Corey Maggette (Milwaukee)
  • Josh McRoberts (Indiana)
  • J.J. Redick (Orlando)
  • Shelden Williams (Denver)

UNC (11)

  • Vince Carter (Orlando)
  • Wayne Ellington (Minnesota)
  • Raymond Felton (New York)
  • Tyler Hansbrough (Indiana)
  • Brendan Haywood (Dallas)
  • Antawn Jamison (Cleveland)
  • Ty Lawson (Denver)
  • Jerry Stackhouse (Miami)
  • Jawad Williams (Cleveland)
  • Marvin Williams (Atlanta)
  • Brandan Wright (Golden State)

NCSU (2)

  • J.J. Hickson (Cleveland)
  • Josh Powell (Atlanta)

Wake Forest (8)

  • Al-Farouq Aminu (LA Clippers)
  • Tim Duncan (San Antonio)
  • Josh Howard (Washington)
  • James Johnson (Chicago)
  • Chris Paul (New Orleans)
  • Ishmael Smith (Houston)
  • Darius Songaila (Philadelphia)
  • Jeff Teague (Atlanta)

We’ll see if others such as Rashad McCants, Sean May, John Scheyer, and Danny Green can find there ways onto the list…

ESPN3.com Coming to TWC

On October 25 Time Warner Cable customers will finally get access to ESPN3.com. I have to say that while the announcers are terrible and the production quality is not first rate, the lack of commercials in these games is really appealing. Some of the raw feed commentary during the “commercial” breaks is more interesting than the game itself.

In the meantime you can login by picking “Comcast” from the pulldown menu, then use footballboard as the username and warchant as the password.

TWC to Show UNC/ECU Game

The UNC/ECU game on Saturday is scheduled for coverage by ESPN3.com. Unfortunately all of the aspects of the recent legal agreement between ESPN’s parent company and Time Warner Cable have not been ironed out yet, and ESPN3.com is not yet available for TWC customers. Thankfully Time Warner announced today that they will air the game on channel 520. Gametime is 3:30.

Are You Ready For Some…Traffic?

traffic ESPN’s College Football Primetime will air the N.C. State vs. Cincinnati game Thursday night. Kickoff is at 7:30, and the event is expected to draw a full house…and you know what that means: avoid West Raleigh tomorrow evening. If you work in RTP, certainly consider a different route home, and realize that others plan to do so as well.

The game will be televised in HD on ESPN, but unfortunately will not be in 3D. The 3D game of the week is Clemson vs. Auburn (Sat., 7pm).

ACC Calendars Ready for Download

basketball Local basketball fans with iPhones, Android Phones, Blackberrys, Outlook, Palm devices and more are in luck! Gogoraleigh’s Calendars Tab is your home for free 2010-2011 basketball schedules for the entire ACC in .CSV, .ICS, and Google Calendar formats.

This year gogo goes all out, offering schedules for each individual ACC team, as well as one giant calendar which includes all games. Events on the calendars include not only the game time, but also links to ESPN’s team pages and the name of the venue where the game is being played. On some devices, like Android phones, the location becomes a link to Google Maps showing the venue’s location.

Gogoraleigh decided that these 13 calendars aren’t enough, though, and added home-only calendars for UNC and N.C. State.

Outlook-Based Blackberry/iPhone/Palm Users
  • ACC_Cal After downloading the appropriate CSV file (see below), create a new folder in your in Outlook calendar (Bball11, for example). Use the File | Import and Export… to import from “another program or file”, then “Comma Separated File (Windows)”. Be sure to pick your new calendar folder as the target. This will set up the schedule in your new sub-calendar where you can make whatever changes you want.
  • iPhone Users – Open iTunes with the iPhone connected and sync (you may have to specify your newly added calendar in the “Info” tab’s Calendars section.) Now you can view the basketball schedules as their own sub-calendar or as a part of all calendars.
  • DUK_UNC If you have a device which doesn’t support subcalendars (like Treos and older Palm devices), you’ll need to copy the imported basketball events into your main calendar. When you are happy with the way the subcalendar looks, change the calendar view to “Events” (instead of 7-day or 31-Day or whatever view you’re using). “Select All” from the list, and drag them over to your main “Calendar” (The Treo and other Palm Handhelds only sync to the main calendar – time for Palm to get with the program on that one!). If you want to keep your sub-calendar intact, use Ctrl-drag instead of plain drag. That will create a copy of each event to the main Calendar and keep the Bball08 calendar in place. Sync your handheld to copy the events to the handheld.
Google Calendar/Android Users

NCS_WAK My favorite way to follow the ACC’s basketball calendar is to add it to my Google Calendar set. The Google Calendar is a dynamic, subscribable calendar that offers much flexibility. For instance, several game times have not been announced. As soon as they are set, actual game times will magically appear in your calendar. Also, Google Calendar offers a map link for quick viewing of the game’s venue location.

Additionally, Google has created a simple interface through mobile phone browsers. It allows one to view and implement ACC Calendar events. It also recognizes hyperlinks in the event’s description, so easy access to the team files is achievable by using the online Google Calendar app. To view these add the calendar using the link below, then visit http://calendar.google.com from within Safari on the iPhone or your Android browser.

(Note: Gogoraleigh will also carry the home-only calendars as an integrated feature of its normal Gogoraleigh Do-It Calendar).

google_calendar_fluid To view a Google Calendar, go to the gogoraleigh Calendars page and click on the appropriate calendar link. Once the calendar is displayed, you can add it your set of Google Calendars by clicking on the “+Subscribe” bottom on the bottom right.

iCal Users

There are two options:

  • Use iCalTextImport to import the .CSV version (linked above) of the schedule.
  • Download the .ics file from the Calendars page and import it into iCal.
Palm Desktop and Yahoo! Calendar Users

Palm-logo My brother-in-law taught me a neat trick. In order to get a CSV calendar into Palm Desktop, one can use Yahoo! Calendar as an intermediary. After downloading the .CSV file from gogoraleigh, open Yahoo! Calendar and click “Options” in the upper right. Then select “Import/Export”. Go to “Import From Outlook”, selected the filename, and click “Import”. Yahoo! Calendar users are done at this point. Palm Desktop users need to verify the import, then return to the “Export to Palm Desktop” section. Pick your target and hit “Export”. The resulting .DBA file should then be ready to import into Palm Desktop.

Beware! It appears easy to lump Yahoo! Calendar events that are unrelated into one calendar. If you are simply using Yahoo! Calendar as a conduit to Palm Desktop, verify that your calendar is clean before originally importing the .CSV file, otherwise unrelated events will get lumped with basketball dates in your resulting .DBA file.

RSS

rss Each of the Google Calendars carries an RSS feed. This might be an interesting addition to your RSS Feed collection because each calendar change will appear in the feed. This is most useful as an alert to a game time changes in the schedule. The RSS Feed for each calendar can be found when viewing each individual Google Calendar.

Notes

Calendars are apt to change, so check back occasionally for updates. To determine the version of your schedule, open the note associated with any event, and look for the version number. If your calendar is older than those listed above, simply delete the events in Outlook in your old one and import the events of the newer file. Google Calendar is dynamically updated on the back end, so you always know you are up to date when using Google Calendar.

Use at your own risk. I do not accept responsibility for any consequences resulting from errors in the schedule.

Obit: Kaye Cowher

Kaye Cowher, the 54 year-old wife of former NCSU player and Steeler coach Bill Cowher, lost her battle with skin cancer Friday. The Bunn native and her husband moved here with their three girls after Bill’s retirement, and became a very supportive, tight family. They were frequently seen as a friendly, loving family at the daughters’ Ravenscroft sporting events and at North Ridge Club.

The Pittburgh Post-Gazette has a bit more on the story.

ECU Football Schedule for Sync and Downlaod

imageECU Football fans who like electronic calendars rejoice! I’ve uploaded the 2010 ECU Football schedule in .ICS, and Google Calendar formats. This way you can easily port the schedule over to your Android phone, iPhone, Blackberry, Google Calendar, Outlook, and more!

Without a doubt, the gogoraleigh ECU Football Calendar is the best on the web. The game locations are included, so devices that can automatically associate the location field with a map will offer these locations as hyperlinks. This is perfect if you are going to the game in an away city! With the synced versions of the calendar, gametime changes and television information are automatically updated as the information becomes available.

If you already subscribe to last year’s ECU Football schedule feed, you don’t need to make any changes. The new events now appear in the feed. For those just getting started with this highly efficient method of scheduling, consult the calendars at the gogoraleigh Calendars’ page:
