R-Line Gourmet Food Tour Coming Saturday
On Saturday, April 10th from 2 pm-5 pm, Capital Area Transit, Downtown Raleigh Alliance, and Taste Carolina Gourmet Food Tours are teaming up for a special R-LINE Gourmet Food Tour . Experience some of Raleigh’s most unique and dynamic restaurants in one fun-filled afternoon while riding the R-LINE, downtown Raleigh’s circulator.
As part of the tour, participants will enjoy the opportunity to talk with chefs and owners and sample their food, sourced locally from farm-to-table, before hopping back on the bus to the next stop. From innovative southern and ethnic cuisine to fine-dining eateries to some of downtown’s most reputable bars, there’s something for everyone! “What better way to get to know a place and its people than to eat its food?” says Joe Philipose, co-founder of Taste Carolina Food Tours. “Our tours are as compelling for residents as for visitors; they give locals a unique opportunity to be face-to-face with chefs and artisans they’ve only read about,” adds Philipose.
The Tour will begin at Dos TaQuitos Centro ( map it ) located at 106 S. Wilmington Street in downtown Raleigh. Attendees need to arrive at 1:45 pm and the tour will begin at 2 pm.
The Tour includes stops at:
- Dos TaQuitos Centro
- 18 Seaboard
- Zely & Ritz
- The Cupcake Shoppe
- Busy Bee

- Foundation (and features Escazu Artisan Chocolates and baked goods from Annelore’s Authentic German Bakery)
Cost: $39.50 ($41.49 with online registration fee). Participants must register in advance. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes as there will be much walking.
The Container Store Coming To Raleigh
It is extremely hard to contain myself with TBJ’s news of North Carolina’s first location for The Container Store Coming to Raleigh. The chain’s 49’th store will take the vacant Circuit City store across from Crabtree. The store will open in mid-October.

Styx, Foreigner, Kansas Coming to Cary
On June 9 Booth Amphitheatre will host a trio of Classic Rock giants: Styx , Foreigner , and Kansas . Styx features almost all of the original members, especially Tommy Shaw (“Renegade” singer whose voice is still as good as ever, but does not include Dennis DeYoung (“The Best of Times”). Foreigner consists of original heart-and-soul group member Mick Jones, but is surrounded by replacements. The singer, Kelly Hansen, was once the singer of a the band Hurricane. Foreigner is supporting their newest album, “Can’t Slow Down”, which was released on October 9. Kansas, on the other hand, is largely the same band that we all knew in the 70’s and 80’s. Steve Walsh (who ironically lives in Atlanta) is still the singer. Rich Williams is still handling guitar duties and is still alive, contrary to the obituary of a bizarre former Williams impersonator.
Hopefully the rain will wash away all of the dust in the wind in the meantime. So, send out an urgent email to your friends! Tickets for the event go on sale tomorrow at 10am. (nah, you’re right. I’ve got too much time on my hands.)
Congrats to Duke
Congratulations to the Duke Blue Devils for winning the 2010 national championship. The win keeps that trophy in the Triangle for yet another year. In the last 10 years, 4 of the national champions are from here, and of the last 29 national champions, 9 (31%) are from the Triangle. No doubt about it, the Triangle is the epicenter of basketball.
WRAL iPhone App Goes 2.0
WRAL has just released version 2.0 of their free substitute browser on the iPhone . The new version allows readers to forward stories to Facebook, Twitter, email, and SMS. It also features a tiny current weather in the upper right, so there is no need for one on the lower menu bar any more. The update also allows one to skip to the next story while viewing an individual article.
A long-awaited feature is the ability to lock/unlock rotation. It is hidden in More | Settings. I’m not sure if this is new in 2.0, per se. While it is nice to have the ability to change rotation, it still is not what I suggested. I’d like to see WRAL’s app behave like Safari where it rotates for three orientations, but does not the phone’s top side is down. Safari’s configuration is the best when lying in best, to be honest.
Finally a word of warning; this app is very crashy (even more than normal iPhone apps!). The majority of the time that I skip to the next story the app crashes. Several times it crashed when jumping in and out of news sections. Unless you are incredibly excited about the sharing features, I’d wait until 2.1.
Bulls To Play Devil Rays Saturday
The Durham Bulls will play an exhibition game vs. the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The game is at 3pm at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. While the Bulls will be facing guys that are in “the show”, the Bulls have one thing going for them, the sun. The suncoasters actually play fewer than half of their games in broad daylight.
Star Wars In Concert Coming to RBC Center
On July 18, the RBC Center will host the Star Wars In Concert Tour. Relive the saga “as never before”, with a full symphony orchestra, original movie props, and a giant HD screen…
RDU Terminal Named to Historic Register
The Raleigh-Durham Airport Terminal 1 building has just been announced to the National Register of Historic Places. The blue building, built in 1980, was originally intended to be a hanger, but due to intense demand for more gates, the plan changed the building to function as a second passenger terminal.
The striking design of the building immediately caught the eyes of travelers as they passed through the airport, and became a must-see for out-of-towners. However most importantly, the design has served as an inspiration to many, especially the architects for the entire chain of IKEA stores. “When I originally saw the structure I was dumbfounded. It’s such a masterpiece of sheer beauty and awe, reaching North while equally reaching South”, said IKEA architect Asgiir Sverdisen. The design can be seen in all of IKEA’s 301 international locations.
Not only has the imaginative architecture caught on in the retail world, but also in institutional settings. Partly inspired by package of butter sticks, the new North Carolina Museum of Art also points strongly toward RDU’s gem for its design. “We saw the simplicity of its design, and decided to continue its theme in a way that also recalls a Land O’ Lakes package”, said one NCMA architect.
The new distinction carries weight among historians, too, as buildings on the register may never be demolished unless they are completely irreparable. An RDU spokesperson said Tuesday,”It’s a great day for RDU. The crown jewel of our complex will now stand as a testament of our long-held vision. It will give us focus and inspiration for every RDU project moving forward.”
Thanks to everyone who has followed this year’s series of April Fools Day posts! And now…back to our scheduled programming.
Highrise HT Planned for Cameron Village
Rumors of a new Harris Teeter in Cameron Village have been alive and well for the last decade, but today the details of the plan were unveiled. Fresh off of their much-talked-about opening at North Hills East, HT officials announced that they will open a high-rise HT in Raleigh’s Cameron Village.
The new store will be 13 stories high, but the first 5 levels will be parking garage. Shoppers will enter the store only by elevator, onto the complex’s 6th floor where shoppers will find a fresh food bonanza. “We plan on offering a full Japanese buffet, complete with Kobe beef tips, shabu-shabu, and made-to-order sushi”. Because of the complex’s small footprint, however, patrons will have to take their food to the 9th Floor, “Ladies Lingerie, Feminine Hygiene, and Cafe”, to dine.
“We will have the finest produce section in the Southeast. So much, that it won’t fit on one floor!” Apparently floors 7-8 will be produce. All green produce will be on Floor 7 while all other colors will be on Floor 8. (Note: broccoflower will indeed be on Floor 8). Floor 10 will be automotive and red meats, while cereal, white meats, and household items will be on Floor 11. Everything else will be on Floors 12 and 13. Milk and bread will be in the back corner of floor 13.
All floors will be accessed by elevator. One official said,”We want to keep things as simple and convenient as possible, so we are putting in as few elevators as code will allow. We found that people enjoy breaking their shopping up and stopping for a coffee break while they wait for the elevator”.
The parking garage will charge a “nominal” fee. “We found the the immense popularity of downtown Raleigh’s new parking tolls to be inspiring. Also, we found that the presence of a toll booth in the deck just beyond the store’s entrance slows traffic down in heavy pedestrian areas.”
No word on what will replace the current HT store, however word is that owners are talking to book stores and scotch tape stores about filling the space.
Beltline To Get Roundabouts
The state’s DOT announced today that it has a plan to relieve the Raleigh Beltline’s congestion problems. Citing the immediate success and popularity of Raleigh’s Hillsborough Street Roundabout Plan, the state has decided to implement nine roundabout intersections on Raleigh’s Beltline to ease traffic woes. “We studied the most dangerous intersections and found that the conversion to roundabouts will improve pedestrian safety,” said department official Fred Orangejello. “The concern for the pedestrian on the Beltline has been long-ignored, and it is time to put those with the Right Of Way first”.
In order to accommodate the plan, sections of the 440 Beltline will be narrowed to one lane in each direction. Crosswalks will be marked as the project is completed.
