The Connells to Open The Walt
First we thought it would be Paramore, then it seemed certain it would be the Backstreet Boys. Thankfully rumors were true:
The Connells
will first official headliner for the new downtown amphitheatre. The boys opened Walnut Creek back in 1991, but now, in the shadows of
Boylan Heights
, they will open another Raleigh amphitheatre on Friday, June 4. Admission is free (

- The Small Ponds
- Th’ Bullfrog Willard Mcgee
This is exactly what needed to happen. It will be a great dry run for the house and will give the public a chance to feel out the venue for free.
Raleigh Ranks 4th in Food Spending
Flowingdata.com posted last week a graph showing food expenditures for many American cities. The graph is not only interesting for its presentation of the cities’ overall outlays and population, but also the distribution of dinging out vs. groceries. The average household in Raleigh spends $4,749 on groceries and $5,337. Austin is highest on the list with $12,447 in average overall spending. What doesn’t make a lot of sense is that Raleigh’s total expenditure of $10,086 is so much higher than Charlotte’s $6,306. Do we eat 60% more food than Charlotte? Hardly.

Counting Crows, Augustana Coming to Cary

Counting Crows
will return to the area; this time to Cary’s Booth Amphitheatre. This year’s band that will upstage the Crows (it’s become an annual event)?

. We got a chance to see Augustana at the Cat’s Cradle last fall and they were sensational. Hopefully Augustana singer Dan Layus will feel comfortable bantering between songs in this venue, because he is a hoot. Tickets are just under $40 for lawn and just under $60 for reserved.
Soft Opening for Amphitheatre?
Oh please pretty please let it be true…the talk of the Connells being the actual first band to play at the new amphitheatre downtown. As I lamented on April 17, The Backstreet Boys are the first scheduled event for the facility on Sunday, June 6. (Yes, that is just 3 weeks away) I also stated that it would be fantastic if someone would put together a collection of local bands earlier that weekend to truly christen the place. Well, word is that Raleigh’s own The Connells might be playing there for a soft opening on Friday, June 4. Stay tuned with fingers crossed…
Tesla Making Appearance at North Hills
Perhaps you’ve seen the orange Lamborghini, the red Ferrari, or the silver Porsche Panamera at North Hills from time to time. However this Saturday a real impact car will be appearing there. From 4pm to 6pm an all-electric Tesla Roadster will be on display. The 288 horsepower coup will go 125 mph., does 0-60 in under 4 seconds. Most impressive, however, is that it boasts a 221-mile range per charge.
Earlier in the day, be sure to check out the British Classic Car Show at North Hills. Over 100 antique British Classic Cars will be on display from 8:30am to 3:00pm in front of Coquette.
Mat Kearney Coming to Cat’s Cradle
On Thursday, July 29 Mat Kearney will be returning to the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro.

Raleigh Missing Naming Opportunity for Amphitheatre
Today WRAL is reporting that the City of Raleigh has reached a tentative agreement with Bud Light for naming rights of the new downtown amphitheater. At this point state liquor laws won’t allow it, but of course if there is a check to be written, laws can be changed.
This amphitheater should be dedicated to and named after Sir Walter Raleigh for three reasons:
- It stands on the site that once hosted Sir Walter Chevrolet
- We don’t have ANYTHING around this city named after Walter Raleigh. We have a city name and a statue downtown. No parkways, schools, public facilities.
- The amphitheater could affectionately be known as "THE WALT". We don’t have a decent moniker for our civic center, large amphitheater, or professional arena. This gives us the chance to assign a good, fun, innocent name to the place.
Certainly naming rights can be sold, but to honor the knighted one is the right thing to do for the long run. Remember Hardee’s Walnut Creek Amphitheater and the BTI Center? Naming rights may come and go, but a dedication is long term.
Daniels Middle School To Host Solar Pilot Program
Tomorrow morning Daniels Middle School will officially unveil a set of new solar photovoltaic arrays. The $20,000, 2-KW solar PV system is connected to the school’s electrical system and to internet-based monitoring equipment. This will enable students to study the panels’ electricity.
The SunSense schools program is part of a partnership between Progress Energy Carolinas and the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ’N Community Foundation. It provides a hands-on educational program for middle school and high school students that encourages them to develop innovative energy solutions. Daniels Middle School is one of five winning schools across the Carolinas that received PV arrays and educational materials to help teachers integrate renewable energy learning opportunities into the classroom.
La Volta Now Open
After many months of construction, Italian restaurant
La Volta
is now open. The restaurant is located on Fayetteville Street in the base of the Progress Energy I building, adjacent to the new City Plaza. The restaurant features a good selection of
Northern Italian dishes
mostly priced in the low teens at dinner time, as well as a
lunch menu
featuring salads, turnovers, paninis, pizzas, pastas, and entrees all in the $6-8 range. The restaurant is open 6 days a week, excluding Sunday.
Spring Rolls Opens at North Hills
Spring Rolls
, a Chinese/Thai combo restaurant is now open in North Hills. The restaurant is the third Asian restaurant to occupy the space across from Moe’s, but perhaps the third time is the charm. Part of
the menu
(.pdf) features a wide range of Chinese favorites, as well as sizzling hot platters, chow mein, and “ho fun” selections. The other part of the menu features 19 Thai favorites, excluding curries. The average dinner menu entree price is $11.76.
Chelsea Handler Coming to The Walt
The new downtown amphitheatre will be hosing Chelsea Handler’s Bang Bang summer tour at 8:30 pm on Friday, July 30.

Durham Bulls Playing at Historic DAP Tonight

Tonight the Durham Bulls will play host to Toledo at the historic Durham Athletic Park. The park, featured in the movie “Bull Durham”, hasn’t hosted a Bulls game since September of 1994.

Clark Wins Major!
Congratulations to former N.C. State golfer
Tim Clark
who won his first major victory on the PGA Tour today. Clark bested the field at the famed TPC Sawgrass course winning by one stroke by finishing 16 under par for the weekend. Clark entered the clubhouse with several golfers on the field, but luckily shots like the 1/4” putting miss by Robert Allenby at 17 didn’t fall. Clark was ranked 36th in the world going into the weekend.
