TWC To Rollout Channel Reassignments June 8

The previously mentioned Time Warner Cable channel realignment is coming to the Raleigh area on June 8. From that point on all channels above 100 will be reassigned to numbers based on the following categories:

  • 100s – Local Programming – all OTA channels
  • Lower 200s – Kids & Family
  • Upper 200s – Learning & Discovery, Faith & Inspiration
  • Lower 300s – Entertainment
  • Upper 300s – Home & Leisure, Shopping
  • Lower 400s – News & Info
  • Upper 400s – Music (not Music Choice)
  • 500s – Sports
  • 600s – Movies
  • 700s – Premium Movies, PPV
  • 800s – International
  • 900s – Music Choice
  • 1000s – HD version of the exact same channel with 3-digits

This will be a breeze once you learn a few key channels: CBS, FOX, NBC, and ABC are on 105, 150, 117, and 111. Their HD channels are 1000 higher on 1105, 1150, 1117, and 1111. ESPN is on 500, then ESPN2, ESPNU. Fox Sports Carolinas is on 508. HGTV and Food Network are on 350 and 351, respectively. Palladia is 1453. Yep! That pretty much does it 😉

Got To Be NC Features Double Ferris Wheel

skywheel Remember when the NC State Fair featured the iconic and deeply terrifying Skywheel? In the last 10 years or so that ride has been absent due to the contract with a new ride company at that event. Thankfully, though, the Department of Agriculture’s Got To Be NC Festival has a contact with someone who does have a double-ferris wheel, and it is out at the fairgrounds right now.

The festival runs through tomorrow (Sunday) and features free admission and free parking. Carnival hours are 10am-Midnight on Saturday and 10am to 10pm on Sunday. (Be sure to catch the lawnmower racing events tomorrow.)

Band Together Features Michael Franti

franti On Saturday evening Band Together NC will hold it’s Tenth Annual Charity Concert with Michael Franti and Spearhead headlining. The event features local and national acts and if last year’s crowd of 3,000 people is any indication, a large crowd is expected Saturday.

This year’s beneficiary is StepUP Ministry , an interfaith nonprofit organization that aims to give individuals and families a second chance in life by teaching basic life skills, offering a caring community, providing safe housing, and opening doors for self-sustaining employment. What’s truly impressive is that the group is able to rehabilitate people at about 6% of the annual cost of incarceration in North Carolina. StepUP has an interesting arrangement with Band Together this year. They’ve asked Band Together to simply match funding that StepUP has already found.

While Michael Franti will put on a great show, the opening acts are interesting, too. One eskimO , The Old Ceremony , Holy Ghost Tent Revival, and a special appearance by American Idol top-10 finalist Anoop Desai will open the show. Additional activities include silent auction, live painting and prize raffle.

As before, the event takes place in front of the Lincoln Theatre (126 E. Cabarrus St. – map it ). Doors open at 5 p.m., and performances go from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. (rain or shine).

Cory Doctorow Coming to Chapel Hill

FTW Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill will be hosting author/activist Cory Doctorow on Sunday (5/23) at 1pm. Doctorow will be reading from his new novel, For The Win . Doctorow is the noted Science Fiction author as well as open standards activist who recently created much controversy with his BoingBoing piece, “ Why I Won’t Buy an iPad (and Think You Shouldn’t Either)â€.

With a key personality of the E.F.F. right here in the shadows of the House’s 6th District, one could only dream of a head to head debate between Doctorow and Paul Howard Coble (the guy who authored legislation, the DMCA , that makes it illegal for you to rip a DVD for personal use)…but I digress.
