Trans-Siberian Orchestra Returning to RBC Center
It’s that time of year, again. In 139 more days Ol’ Saint Nick will make his way through Raleigh. Another tradition that seems to be holding steadily is the

appearing at the RBC Center. This year the arena gets the group on Sunday, December 5.

Roby and McCall to Play On The Porch Tonight

Kenny Roby
and Scott McCall (no relation) will be playing tonight’s Music On The Porch event. The event begins at 6pm and the music goes from 7-9ish. There will be bounce rooms for the kids and Fire Dancers from Sparkcon swinging by, as well.
The event takes place at Peace China at Seaboard Station. Capital Creations will also be on hand with $2 cheese pizza. Dogs, food, snacks are welcome, but guests may not (by law) bring their own beer and wine. The MOTP events are family-fun, however children need to stay within the event perimeter and need to be supervised by their parents.
311 Coming to The Walt
On Saturday, October 30,
311
will make its return to Raleigh. This year the show comes to the
downtown Raleigh amphitheater
(which
should
be named after Sir Walter Raleigh). Ticket presale begins on August 17, while public tickets go on sale August 20. No opening act has been announced.
Plug-In Hybrid Conference Picks Raleigh
The
Electric Power Research Institute
(EPRI) recently announced that Plug-In 2011 – an international conference of expert insights on technical advances, market research and policy initiatives shaping the future of plug-in hybrid and electric transportation – will be held in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina, July 18-21, 2011.
The Raleigh Convention Center will be the first venue for the Plug-In Conference that will be held outside of California. The shift in location was envisioned as a way to offer wider access to potential attendees. Next year’s conference will be co-organized by EPRI, Progress Energy and Duke Energy.
“We decided to offer a bit of geographical balance to our conference schedule as a way of exposing more people to the significant progress made toward integrating plug-in hybrid and other electric vehicles into the transportation system,” said Mark Duvall, director of Electric Transportation at EPRI. “The Research Triangle area is an appropriate location that is well-known as an incubator of entrepreneurship, innovation and thought-leadership.”
The Plug-In Conference was launched in San Jose in 2008, moved to Long Beach (Southern California) in 2009 and returned to San Jose this year. It attracts automotive manufacturers, component suppliers, electric utilities, government agencies, the environmental community and academia to exchange ideas and gather information needed to make key decisions related to plug-in hybrid and electric transportation.
Plug-In 2010 includes high-level plenary sessions and 21 breakout sessions and mini-panels focused on driving, connecting and launching technologies required to fully commercialize and integrate electric drive into the marketplace.
The exposition floor, which includes vehicles, electric infrastructure and batteries, and related components, features more than 40 exhibitors. July 27 is Public Night, an open forum where visitors can see the exposition floor and participate in a panel discussion. Triangle ArtWorks Launches Site
Triangle ArtWorks, Inc., a newly formed nonprofit organization, recently announced the launch of its website
and a series of events to link the creative community of the Triangle area and the public. Triangle ArtWorks’ website is a virtual platform to educate and connect the artistic and creative community in the Triangle region, their supporters and the public via discussion forums, articles, blogs, and a clearinghouse for regional resources. The organization is hosting several launch events in the Triangle during the month of August to promote regional networking and collaboration.
Triangle ArtWorks’ charitable and educational mission is to provide services, support and resources to cultivate a vibrant creative community in the Triangle region of North Carolina. From large corporate campuses in Research Triangle Park, to artist cooperatives in Chatham County, the Triangle region has attracted creative talent from across the nation. In fact, the Triangle’s success in attracting artists and creative people has garnered national praise and attention. Yet, the region has lacked a central resource for artists to come together for support, resources and education, for supporters to have an easier way to connect with and support artists and arts groups, and to promote the importance of this community to our region.
Former Raleigh Arts Commissioner, Beth Yerxa, founded Triangle ArtWorks to “create a sense of cohesion for the Triangle’s creative community and its supporters.” Yerxa explained, “The Triangle is made up of many separate towns and cities, with multiple arts councils, different governments, and different priorities for supporting the arts and the creative community. The idea for the website is to have a regional resource for information, education and discussion about what matters to the creative community of the Triangle. We need a better way to connect this community across disciplines and county lines.”

The July 2010 issue includes The Wild Turkey Bar & Lounge among 15 American watering holes. It is one of only two bars in the Southeast named as a best bar for doing business.
Stating that the Wild Turkey Bar & Lounge has been “a cross-sectional hotbed of local politicos, big pharma executives and tech tycoons since it opened in 1984,” author Monica Corcoran Harel goes on to write that this is “the best place to strike a deal in the entire Research Triangle.” On any given night, one might run into local and state elected officials, as well as top executives from SAS, GlaxoSmithKline and more.
The review states that the essential attributes of a great business bar include discreet seating, friendly and attentive staff, a compelling crowd, manageable din, a full range of liquor, good lighting, good food, and decent décor.
Superchunk Coming to Nasher for Release
Superchunk will release its first new album in nine years with a concert on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010 at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. It will be the only North Carolina venue for the Chapel Hill-based band’s national fall tour in support of their new album, “Majesty Shredding” (available 9/14). The concert is open to the public and begins at 8:30 p.m.
Under the Radar Magazine says “Majesty Shredding” displays "a cohesive band scaling the heights of their formidable powers.” Time Out Chicago says the album "puts the pedal to the metal with youthful abandon.”
The Superchunk performance, a complement to the Nasher Museum’s exhibition “The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl,” will take place after a 6 p.m. talk by New York-based visual artist Xaviera Simmons, whose work is part of the exhibition. “The Record” explores the culture of vinyl records through 50 years of contemporary art and features work by 41 artists from around the world who use vinyl records as subject or medium.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for Nasher Museum members and $5 for Duke students with I.D.
Superchunk will have a busy week that week, as they will appear on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon late on the evening of September 20.

Carol Burnett Tickets Now On Sale
Tickets are now on sale for "Laughter and Reflection With Carol Burnett: A Conversation with Carol where the Audience Asks the Questions." The Q&A takes place at the DPAC on Saturday, April 2. The "Conversation with Carol" is a real treat for people in the Triangle, as the DPAC is only one of three venues nationally hosting a "Conversation" event with Carol during the 2011 season.

, will be playing the DPAC. Guy is one of the living blues legends, and has a magnetic personality (I had the opportunity to talk with him in the restroom last month in his bar.

Serious Sports Live at High Park Tonight
From 8:30 to 10:30 tonight, Chip Patterson and Hayes Permar will host a night of jokes, songs, bed-wetting ghost stories, and other entertainment from Serious Sports Productions . You may have heard some of their material on David Glenn’s shows on 850 the Buzz and 99.9 The Fan. The event takes place at the High Park Bar & Grill (corner of Whitaker Mill and Bernard).
Rail Recommendation Coming for Council Today
The Raleigh City Council’s Passenger Rail Task Force will present their report and recommendations at today’s City Council meeting. The group analyzed three proposed plans for High(er) Speed Rail and how it will impact residents and businesses along corridors. The three
plans are online
, and viewing them before today’s 1:00 meeting (televised on RTN) will ease the viewer’s understanding of the subject matter.
The three maps for downtown are the most interesting ( map 1 , map 2 , map 3 – all pdf). The show alternative routes and possibilities for new crossing arrangements. One proposal puts the railway between Capital Blvd and Whitaker Mill Road. The other two put the railway on the Mordecai side of Capital Blvd.
The Task Force presentation falls on page 19 of the City Council’s 24-page agenda. So, while the agenda is not followed at a constant pace, and is sometime ignored, we can at least get a sense of when the presentation will be.
N.C. Tax-Free Weekend Begins Friday
Beginning at 12:01 am on Friday, there will be no sales tax on many items through Sunday night. Items such as clothing, footwear, and school supplies of $100 or less per item; school instructional materials of $300 or less per item; sports and recreation equipment of $50 or less per item, computers of $3,500 or less per item; and computer supplies of $250 or less per item will be exempt.
Clothing accessories, jewelry, cosmetics, protective equipment, wallets, furniture, items used in a trade or business, and rentals are not covered by the exemption and will be subject to the applicable tax.
