Meating Our Needs
A year and a half ago Cary was the next recipient of a site for The Meat House, a butcher shop chain out of the Northeast. The store features and excellent butcher counter, sliced Boar’s Head meats, a small, but high quality grocery area, and prepared foods and sauces from local sources.
While the meat counter is excellent and the store offers some of those more difficult to find meats, that isn’t the subject of this review. At hand is the excellent selection of convenience meats.
At any time The Meat House has around 25 marinated/prepared meat selections; all of which are excellent. Our favorite is the Burgundy-marinated Beef Tips. The sweet, wine marinate tends to form a sweet crust on the grill, and the final product is phenomenal. Also excellent are the Meat House Marinated Beef Tips.
Beef items aren’t the only offering, though. The Meat House Marinated chicken breasts, Cilantro-Lime marinated turkey tips, and the Sun-dried tomato marinated chicken breasts are all excellent. One of my favorite poultry offerings has not been available lately, however: OuttaThePark-marinated chicken wings.
Often we will get meats (around 0.4 lbs/person), a rice or risotto kit, and salad items on a weeknight, and throw together a quick, easy meal. The total cost ends up being around $5 per person.
This Summer a new Meat House will open in Chapel Hill, in the former Applebee’s location across from the Hotel Siena. This probably won’t pose a big threat to Cliff’s Meat Market in Carrboro, but stands to but seriously into the Fresh Market and Harris Teeter businesses in East Chapel Hill. Whole Foods is only a block away, however that store is somewhat of a religious icon to many vegetarians in Chapel Hill, and the presence of The Meat House will not faze them.
The newest Meat House, however, is at Raleigh’s Quail Corners. Just like the Cary location, the Raleigh location has been an instant success. Thankfully we have an alternative to Whole Foods, Harris Teeter, and The Fresh Market; and just in time for Spring.
New Doo An Unfortunate Choice
Recently WRAL was on Twitter pimping the new hairdo for one of their top anchors, Debra Morgan. I am a fan of Debra Morgan, however with that said, what in the world did she do to her hairdresser to deserve THIS? Morgan has always sported a blonde bob and other variations ( 1 , 2 ) but now it seems that things have gotten out of control. The color is maxed out and the shape isn’t flattering at all.
Was this a move to try to get her from cutesy/perky realm to FoxNews Hot? If so, that isn’t what Debra Morgan is about. She’s too good for this.

Horner Foundation Continues of Honors for Roads Less Taken
1987 Sanderson graduate Paul Horner was killed nine years ago while paddling the Oyacachi River in Ecuador. From American Whitewater Magazine:
In all regards Paul was a tough act to follow, and leaves behind a soulful legacy of discernment. He despised television and fast food, never listened to commercial radio, and was generally suspicious of the corporate world, but was never self-righteous or prudish. He basically loved to challenge himself, and found every aspect of life worth examining. Descending rivers with close friends became a spiritual calling and a pursuit that he found to be true. His death is not to be compared with those of the inexperienced or the foolish, nor was it the result of a dreadful miscalculation brought on by a driving ego. Paul was simply pursuing his dream and it delivered him to this place, a beautiful jungle river in rural South America and the company of friends. A hero’s death.
Sanderson students the mid 80’s knew and liked Paul, though he really came out of his shell at UNC. Just before beginning college, I got to know Paul through family friends. Before long it seemed that everywhere I turned, a friend of mine knew him. He had a funny dichotomy of a quiet manner, yet very talkative when the right button got pushed.
Paul’s family and friends have started the Paul Horner Foundation . It aims to further the spirit of Paul by identifying and nurturing a Wake County public school student each year who wishes to engage in an unusual endeavor which might not necessarily be encouraged by his peers or the society around him. The Foundation believes it important to support young people who pursue uncommon goals in a spirit of kindness and individuality. The Foundation will fund a full scholarship to allow this young person, via a summer experience, to pursue an uncommon dream and thereby inspire those around him.
The application deadline for this year’s experience is April 30.
