Coach Dean Smith had suffered from dementia for many years, and his life ended quietly. The irony that such a sharp mind that steered so many storied comebacks would not be able to mount one in his own life is a bitter pill to swallow. That we are not in control of our fates is just one of the lessons Smith taught us.
There are hundreds of great stories being passed around these days about great Smith moments. Mine came after reading his book Multiple Offense and Defense . It is a fantastic, concise X’s and O’s manual for running several of the offensive and defensive sets Smith used in the first half of his coaching career. There are also great lessons about team play, running structured practices, acknowledgment of the groundbreakers that came before us, and the beauty of math in the game we love. That final point led me to corral my own stats for the team, which eventually blossomed into my Tar Heel HOOPla website 20 years ago.
In the book Coach Smith explained his system for evaluating offensive and defensive efficiency, and stated that his team’s goals are to exceed 0.85 points per possession and to keep the opponent below 0.75 points per possession. The book was written before the advent of the 3-point shot, leaving me to wonder about how much that rule changed the stated goals. Woody Durham hosted a weekly call-in show with the coach and I was able to ask him my question on the air. He first stated,â€Very good! You’ve done your homework,†then stated his updated goals of 0.95 and 0.85, respectively.
Apparently I’m not alone in being fascinated by the statistics basketball brings us, as evidenced by the popularity of Ken Pomeroy’s work. Pomeroy’s stats differ from Smith’s because Smith considered a possession to end when a field goal is attempted while Pomeroy considers it ending when the other team gets possession of the ball. Pomeroy reaches this figure by subtracting offensive rebounds from field goal attempts, making Total Possessions an irrelevant statistic. Smith’s method, on the other hand, leaves a Total Possessions differential which reflects the true rebounding, making his method much more useful.
When I was in Chapel Hill for college and dental school, I only had a couple of brushes with Dean Smith. One morning my dental class sat in a hallway waiting to take an exam. A hush fell on the group as Dean Smith walked down the hall by us after completing an appointment with one of our professors. It was as if we all wanted to be put into the game. We all got a chuckle at how we responded, but also were impressed that someone like Dean Smith thought that highly of our teacher.
I was lucky enough to get to sit behind the bench in ‘93 to watch the eventual National Champions play Duke on Senior Day. Committed recruits Jerry Stackhouse and Jeff McInnis sat in front of me while uncommitted Rasheed Wallace sat two seats toward midcourt. Wallace, of course, chose UNC over his hometown Temple, and Smith would later proclaim Wallace to be the best player Smith coached. The photo above is from the book Return to the Top , and shows me right behind Stackhouse and McInnis. Jim Valvano sat across the court doing his final full broadcast. Phil Ford, one of the greatest college basketball players of all-time, and Bill Guthridge, one of the best big-man coaches in the history of the game, were 10 feet in front of me. It was an incredible experience to be a spectator around these great masters of their craft. Of course from that angle one gets an appreciation of the vertical elements of basketball, but I was also able to appreciate the level of focus players from each team carried.
We essentially lost Coach Smith several years ago with the onset of dementia. Unlike other coaches, Smith retired and made few public appearances. In one of the many pieces of irony surrounding Smith, he was always proud of his ability to teach, yet could have taught us all so much about the game and life after retiring from coaching. Smith could be ruthless in team practices, slicing giants to pieces with his words. However those were players (and families) into which he had emotionally invested. He would never have felt comfortable criticizing the play of players he didn’t know, so he never pursued the chance to teach us more.
Smith learned basketball from Phog Allen who learned basketball from the game’s inventor, James Naismith. While Smith may be gone and the building bearing his name may not stand for the remainder of our lives, Smith leaves an indelible mark on both the game and the culture of the State of North Carolina through not only his bountiful coaching tree, but also through the many of us whose lives were enriched by his work.

Last year’s epic overtime battle was a modern era classic, and while many of the players return for tonight’s game, the primary factors are completely different. The NCSU team has only recently found its identity. We knew they had a talented backcourt, but the the inconsistent play in the first dozen games really hampered the team. They keys to NCSU tonight are two-fold: While point guard Cat Barber continues to bring outstanding athleticism but sputtering smarts to the game, transfer Trevor Lacey has become an all-conference level performer. Nobody is talking about how Lacey can do everything that T.J. Warren could do, but the truth is, he isn’t far from consistently being that level of player. BJ Anya is a great shotblocker who is foul-prone. If he can stay on the court, NCSU’s frontcourt can match up...

Last year’s epic overtime battle was a modern era classic, and while many of the players return for tonight’s game, the primary factors are completely different.
The NCSU team has only recently found its identity. We knew they had a talented backcourt, but the the inconsistent play in the first dozen games really hampered the team. They keys to NCSU tonight are two-fold:
State’s play is straightforward, but UNC’s is not. The first part of this 2015 season has been a trying one for UNC fans. The team, sporting with 6 McDonald’s All-Americans, has struggled to show any kind of cohesiveness and consistency. However dissecting the Heels reveals some things about this team that the babbling, mantra-driven local sports radio media fails to see.
With UNC’s weakness being outside shooting, one would think UNC would play to its strengths, however they are attempting 24% of their shots from beyond the arc. Usually Roy’s teams can shoot the 3 well, and only take about 22% of their shots from behind the arc.
The keys for UNC moving forward are establishing Joel Berry as the primary PG, moving Marcus Paige to the SG, narrowing the rotation, and running the offense through Kennedy Meeks.
Much attention is on Marcus Paige, however the statistics show that UNC falls apart offensively when Kennedy Meeks leaves the game. For UNC to win tonight, they need an excellent game out of Meeks, and to shut down the Pack offensively.
In the last 20 years NC State is 1-14 after beating Duke or UNC. I expect NCSU to struggle shooting the ball tonight, and for UNC to win this chapter. Revenge for tonight’s loser comes in 5 weeks, though, where NCSU may play their best Dean Dome game in quite some time. We’ll see…

Impressively, nearly every Shindig artist has had a song in heavy rotation on Alternative Nation (Sirius/XM) this year (the same cannot be said for the event’s chief sponsor, however).
The day can be divided into 3 chapters. IAMDYNAMITE (“ Stereo â€) opens the new alternative chapter with their driving, jangly sound. However the day really gets going with the performer of one of Alternative’s best, tertiary songs of the year, Sir Sly ( Gold ), takes the stage. Brit pop Wolf Gang ( â€The King and All Of His Men â€) follows, then Big Data takes the stage (“ Dangerous â€). “Dangerous†will probably be the big hit song of the afternoon. Bear Hands (“ Giants â€) and the outrageous Foxy Shazam (“ Oh Lord â€) round out the first chapter.
The sound takes a more Modern Rock feel at 4:45 when The Pretty Reckless (“ Heaven Knows†) takes the stage with the day’s only female lead singer. They are followed by 90s Modern Rock kings Fuel (“ Shimmer â€, “ Hemorrhage (In My Hands) â€). Fuel is, ironically, the band that has gotten the most airplay of this event on Raleigh radio through the years.
This decade returns with a gigantic tub of “happy†at 7pm when Fitz & the Tantrums (“ Out Of My League â€, “ The Walker â€, “ MoneyGrabber â€) take the stage. Their April 2003 release, “More Than Just A Dreamâ€, was one of the year’s best CDs.
At 8:10 Foster the People will take the stage and probably mark the entire event’s apex. Best known for “Pumped Up Kicksâ€, Foster… has snuck in eleven other hits since, and stands as one of the most significant bands of this decade. (“ Best Friend â€, “ Houdini â€, “ Helena Beat â€)
Headliner Weezer takes the stage at 9:25. With their 15+ hits, Weezer is one of the most important Alternative Rock bands in the wake of Nirvana. However the bulk of their excellence came in the 90s, and while I’m sure their show will be as good as it was in the DPAC earlier this year, this is a school night, so forgive us for leaving early. (“ Say It Ain’t So â€, “ Island In The Sun â€, “ Back to the Shack â€)

The design’s use of the school’s bright red color around the court boundary and a second stain tone inside the 3-point arc do an excellent job of marking the court’s important functional zones for the viewer. Unfortunately, though, the second stain tone is not used in the free throw semicircle, and is inconsistent with the function of that zone.
The zone’s function is actually consistent with the darker stained area, and thus, should be colored the same way. The current appearance may lead an official or viewer to incorrectly thinking a player is inside the 3-second zone when they are not.
Here is how the corrected court would look:
Taking this a bit further, let’s examine the free throw circle anyway. In 1981 college basketball instituted the Alternating Possession rule. Before this change, any simultaneous possession was settled with a jump ball at the closest of the court’s then three jump circles. Back then the free throw “circle†was completed with a dotted semicircle in the lane. Those dots disappeared in the ‘90s, but the vestigial arc inexplicably remains. Correcting the court for today’s rules, we see such a design:
While the rectangular lane with no arc shows a harsh 90-degree angle at the ends of the free throw lines, this design shows the zones of the court most clearly.

Fan TV is an interesting offering, given the secret insertion of the Integration Ban legislative proposal last week (which would allow cable companies to design equipment that doesn’t use an internal CableCARD, the next step in their abandonment of the technology – pay attention, TiVO users !). Perhaps this is TWC’s set-top box of the future. If TWC can offer all of its channels to the FanTV, it can be a fantastic improvement over their awful current selection. This box will not be a DVR, however if the OnDemand services can offer the most recent episodes, that should be enough for non-sports fans. TV behavioral statistics show that people don’t really use their DVRs, so that technology is headed for extinction, anyway.
At first blush the setup seems as simple as the Chromecast, Roku, and AppleTVs, but the remote is simply a touch pad. Interesting (though I much prefer a smartphone/tablet interface that slings to a TV over these 10-foot interfaces on the current devices.) With a $99 introductory price the FanTV might be a great experiment for the summer. Likely the selling prices for these on eBay will be greater than $99, so what’s to lose?

Over the next 3 minutes, though, St. Louis didn’t go away, instead trimming the lead to 10 by 5:00 remaining. From that point on, St. Louis applied the Jimmy V strategy of fouling and full court pressure, and the Pack didn’t respond well, making only 9 of 21 free throws from that point forward. Everyone was to blame for the collapse. The players who made the best plays made some of the dumbest plays, too. However there were three main factors that explain this collapse: Fatigue – The Wolfpack played 3 games in the ACC Tournament over 3 days, learned of their seed the following day, left at 5am to Dayton, had a walk-through, played a game the next day, traveled the next day, then played the next day. That’s 5 games in 8 days, and the team was both physically and mentally exhausted when...

However there were three main factors that explain this collapse:
Attacking a good full-court press involves good spacing and decisive action. The main idea is that you want to advance the ball up the center of the court with passes, if possible. Once the ball is inbounded, you send your slow big man long for a long pass. This pulls a defender away and reduces the attack to 4-on-4. The other three players form an umbrella for the ball handler. The center of the umbrella is the preferred pass, however if he is covered, there are two other options.
As the diagram shows once the ball gets to the center of that umbrella, the weakside umbrella man sprints down the middle for the pass. The other two adjust to create a new umbrella for the new ballhandler. Once the ball beats the pressure, you advance hard down the court. In order to do this, the receiver catches the ball, he quickly pivots and looks to attack. When executed correctly, there is never a back-pass option for the receiver.
State faced 14 full-court pressure possessions. On four of them St. Louis fouled immediately. However of the remaining 10, NCSU handled only one well. Let’s look at a few of them.
With 3:43 remaining the team essentially abandons Tyler Lewis against the press, and the Pack burns a timeout to re-set.
With 3:15 remaining, State appears to be using some kind of 3-back/2-long arrangement. The ball gets to the center, but the wings don’t adjust, and TJ Warren ends up throwing a dangerous pass way down court.
With 3:00 remaining State uses the same 3+2 arrangement, and Tyler Lewis attempt to dribble around screens with his weak hand, which results in a travel (turnover). No attack of the middle was attempted.
With 2:13 remaining, State inbounds the ball to TJ Warren, but teammates stand there and don’t get open. Luckily Warren was fouled in the tie-up (he missed the first, made the second)
With 1:55 remaining, State is an an all-hands-on-deck arrangement, inviting a 5th defender to the party, and clogging the floor. TJ Warren is dribbling with his weak hand, and the other three men back don’t move to the middle. Instead Warren is left to dribble toward us, and doesn’t give an outlet pass to a streaking Cat Barber (in the bottom of the screen).
Hallelujah! With 1.36 remaining, the Pack finds correct spacing, and gets the ball to the power position at the middle of the umbrella, a McDonald’s All-American point guard. What does he do? Immediately passes the ball back where the defense can still be a factor. Even Dan Bonner asks,â€Why did he pass the ball back ? Remember: Pivot, then attack!
With 1:07 they inbound it to Warren at the sideline who doesn’t immediately attack. Instead, he waits and invites the double-team. He then commits to jumping into the air and is lucky enough to find Raulston Turner in the power position. Turner then travels (not called) and returns the ball to the streaking Warren who is off to the races. The dangerous pass to Turner could have been avoided if the team adjusted after Warren got the ball. Perhaps an even better move for Turner was to pivot and get the ball to the opposite side where Cat Barber was streaking unguarded. The whole point of this is to attack so hard that the pressing team cannot catch up and foul you, but keeping the ball along that right sideline lets the defense off a bit. It’s not a bad play by Turner, but not one that breaks the game wide open.
With 0:49 remaining, State inbounds to the sideline! This time, however, Barber immediately dribbles to the power position where he is fouled. Two teammates stand passively in their positions and watch 4 defenders collapse on Barber. (Barber makes one, misses the second)
With 0:36 remaining, State still opts for all 5 guys back, allowing that 5th defender and removing all gaps for beating St. Louis’ pressure. Here they have inbounded the ball to Warren who doesn’t pivot. Instead he passes the ball back to Freeman in a position under the basket! Shame! Freeman has only one option since nobody has filled the most important position on the court, the center spot. Luckily he has a reverse pass over to Lee at the near sideline, which he lollipops. Lee immediately dribbles in place, and allows the defense to attack him. With no power position in place still , he loops a Hail Mary to Warren at midcourt at the far sideline. This pass is in the air a long time, making it easier to steal, and allows the defense to approach Warren and foul him.
Of course, the most popular way to beat a fouling full-court pressure is to make your free throws. However the better way is to flex your muscles and get some easy fast break points, demoralizing the opponent (see Houston’s performance in the Kemper Arena in the Regional Finals in 1983). The offense has to be in position, however, to attack the press, and that is what the coaches of these players have failed to engrain during practices. I coached 11 years at the little league level, and we had 11 and 12 year olds attacking the middle just as I prescribed, so the argument that these players are “young†is invalid.
Fatigue was a factor in their missing free throws, however when you are fatigued and stressed, what you’ve been taught is what comes out. These players all played plenty of AAU ball, and the coaches along the way, not just Mark Gottfried, are to blame. We have a system where young players are spending 1000s of hours playing out-of-school basketball, doing extensive traveling not only in high school, but middle school, too, and they don’t know fundamental details such as how to attack a full-court press. This , even more than the unexpected collapse, is what has my stomach in knots today.

]]> This week Time Warner Cable announced a major shakeup to their channel lineup. By automatically selecting the picture mode and reestablishing channel groups, channels should be easier to navigate. The rearrangement also gives more space for TWC’s higher margin channels, movies and On Demand. The changes take place on March 11, 2014.
Channels 1-99 will stay the same, however nearly every channel above 100 will have a new assignment according to the following groups:
Because high-definition is the new norm, it appears that the SD version of channels with an HD signal are being dropped. This means that there will no longer be a “+1000†HD counterpart for each lower channel. ESPN HD will be 300, and there just won’t be an ESPN SD. This should make navigating easier…until UHD (“4Kâ€) content is offered.
It is an excellent improvement that one can access HD channels with only a 3-digit number. However the most popular channels, CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox, are in disarray in the far reaches of the 1200s , requiring 4-digits. WRAL, “channel 5â€, moves from 1105 to…1209. WTVD, “channel 11â€, moves to…1200. How is that an improvement? These new assignments neither follow the patterns of long-held Over the Air channel assignments nor TWC’s arbitrary single digit assignments. These are the customers’ favorite channels, and they should be offered in more intuitive positions. THEY should occupy the 100 tier, while everything else should be pushed up 100 channels. Sport packages, a very light seller, should be in the 1400s (1000 higher than the 400s, where other sports should be), and Internationals should share the 900s with Latino.
There is still no word, thankfully, about any changes to the Clear QAM channels. Last March the FCC removed the requirement that cable companies offer content that can be obtained freely over the air (with an antenna) with no equipment restrictions. In other words until the FCC’s ruling last year, TWC was required to offer WRAL on 5.1 so that your HDTV could scan and tune this channel without a cable box. Now there is no law forbidding TWC from requiring a box for any channel. (eventually the system will have to drop their analog channels, thus requiring a set top box for every TV – no 1-99 in other words).
There is no need to obtain new equipment for the new channel lineups. Cable boxes will cough, sputter, and reboot magically on 3/11 and load the new channel assignments. For those of us with CableCard equipment (Windows Media Center, TiVo), however, we will have to run a rescan manually to download the new assignments.
Download a PDF of the new lineups, by channel .

The acrobatics, music, and production did not disappoint and had the Raleigh crowd standing on its feet throughout the bows. Quidam is an engaging show that features several sets of solo and small group acrobatic performances. From the classic diabolo (Chinese yo-yo) to the incredible Aerial Contortion in Silk, the show is classic Cirque. I was totally impressed with even the simplest accomplishments, such as the clown's rolling of a hula hoop across the floor back to himself, but not before completing two complete circles. The highlight, however, was the act called "Statue"; an incredible display of slowly transitioning 2-person yoga poses. The amount of strength required to do something like this act is unimaginable, to be honest. It is the act that is worth the price of admission. The production is fantastic. Quidam's staging...

Quidam is an engaging show that features several sets of solo and small group acrobatic performances. From the classic diabolo (Chinese yo-yo) to the incredible Aerial Contortion in Silk, the show is classic Cirque. I was totally impressed with even the simplest accomplishments, such as the clown’s rolling of a hula hoop across the floor back to himself, but not before completing two complete circles.
The highlight, however, was the act called “Statue”; an incredible display of slowly transitioning 2-person yoga poses. The amount of strength required to do something like this act is unimaginable, to be honest. It is the act that is worth the price of admission.
The production is fantastic. Quidam’s staging features 5 arcing trusses along which trapeze setups travel, allowing for some dramatic entrances for some characters. There are several tricks with the stage, too, but I won’t give that away. The backdrop, however, is a pair of small compartments for the seemingly live band. The roof of the band shells, as it turns out, is the staging area for the 5 trusses.
Quidam is staged in the PNC Arena’s “Twilight Theater” configuration, which means that only the southern 1/4 of the lower bowl is available, and the stage is essentially where the basketball court baseline would be. Third level and the other 3/4 of the arena are curtained off, making the acoustics excellent. Sightlines are outstanding in this configuration, however the best seats are in the lower rows and require a treacherous climb for some to reach the restrooms. (Consider this if you are taking older and less mobile family and friends). Tonight’s performance was surprisingly full, so hopefully more of these performance will return.
Quidam runs through Sunday with matinee and evening performances on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets start at $35.

There are a few rules to follow as well:
Parking is always interesting for these events. The decks in North Hills and the surface lots usually fill up and spill across Lassiter Mill into the neighborhood and into the Lassiter. Another option is North Hills East, where there is some surface parking, but also hundreds of deck spaces. Please be patient and careful crossing Six Forks Rd. at the Dartmouth signal.
