Feel The Rumble?
That’s the sound of the Nancy Grace freight train. It most certainly has its eyes on Raleigh right now. That’s all I will say about this senseless, nauseating tragedy. For goodness sakes the rest of the media will deliver more than we want.
Tijuana Flats Coming to Quail Corners
The area’s first Tijuana Flats (Warning: Music) is coming to the former 7-Eleven space in Quail Corners shopping center this fall (Falls of Neuse and Millbrook). The 73-store fast-casual Tex-mex chain is based in Winter Park, FL, and claims to stock over 700 hot sauces from around the world.
Woody’s Bar-B-Q Coming to North Ridge
Woody’s Bar-B-Q will soon be opening in the former Hardee’s space in North Ridge Shopping Center. The 31-store, Jacksonville, FL-based chain appears to be presenting a direct challenge to nearby Red Hot & Blue. So, it will be interesting to watch this one as I have recently documented the curious moves occurring in Falls Village.
Great Outdoor Provision Co. To Close in Falls Village
TBJ is reporting that the Great Outdoor Provision Co. will close its Falls Village operation. Apparently they and the center’s owner, Bell Properties (a top-notch REIT out of Greensboro), could not agree to terms on a new lease.
This is a curious situation. I assume that Steve Bell would never explain the real story to me if I asked, but it seems rather odd that a shopping center that has lost its grocery store anchor, its nice restaurant anchor, and a slew of small stores in the back would play hardball in this economy with a high-end tenant who claims that they wish to keep their store open.
Perhaps a partial demolition of the complex is in the works. The 35-year old center’s original section is designed like a hook and has terrible frontage for stores in the rear of the property as well as on the back side of GOPC (near Chick-Fil-a). Also next door is an apartment complex that is pushing 40 years old. All of this is in an affluent area, but the risk of seeing the area slide in the way that North Hills Drive has is very real with aging rental properties (anyone notice the rise in crime, dead bodies found, and graffiti near 440 and Glenwood Ave lately?). Perhaps a reorganization of the shopping center property as well as the adjacent apartment property would be a fantastic injection of new life for the North Ridge area.
Yves Delorme Closing
The Yves Delorme store in North Hills is closing. The last day for the store is Saturday, and the remaining stock is being discounted 40%.
Taste of Thai Closes
Greensboro-based Taste of Thai has closed their Raleigh store. The restaurant was located on Falls of Neuse (next to the Carolina Ale House), an area of Raleigh that has seen dramatic turnover in restaurants over the past decade. The site was originally The Cooker. Gift Certificates for Taste of Thai will be honored at their Greensboro locations.
El Rodeo Grill Brings Mid-Mex to North Raleigh
During the summer Joel Ibarra announced that he was packing up the Jibarra concept and taking it downtown . Ibarra owns the El Rodeo at Townridge Square, too, and decided to convert the old Jibarra space into a new ‘tweener concept, the El Rodeo Grill. The concept aims squarely at the mid-level of Raleigh’s restaurants, and is likely to do quite well in its niche.
The new decor is a bit more casual, though many of the fixtures from the chic Jibarra remain. Walls have been painted festive reds, oranges, and greens. The menu (.PDF) is short and simple, and features entrees predominantly in the $10-$16 range. Items such as enchiladas, carne asada, and fajitas populate a menu otherwise full of interesting items.
We started out the evening with the queso, which was good; very runny queso fresco with some green chilis mixed in. The roasted corn and poblano soup hit the spot. It is similar to its counterpart at Mez, but gets a little more personality from its peppers.
For entrees, my wife won with the delicious grilled steak tacos. The smoky salsa and guacamole made the steak come alive. I decided to be adventuresome and get the grilled Steak Parrilla (skirt steak and chorizo, and peppers). The steak was of fair quality and the chorizo was good, but overall the meal just overloaded me with fats and left me feeling bleh. In retrospect I should have ordered Camarones al Gusto (seared shrimp in one of three different sauces). I’m definitely looking forward to trying it next time.
Shucker’s Sold, Moving
Sue Stock recently wrote a story about Shucker’s Oyster Bar in Wake Forest. Instead of closing, the restaurant has actually been bought by new owners who are moving to a larger spot nearby around New Years.
I wish the new owners good luck, and assume that the current location needs a lot of work, but isn’t there something to be said for not upsetting the apple cart?
Bear Mill Closed in TTC
Citing a 76% decrease in business since the riot a few weeks ago, the Bear Mill Store in Triangle Town Center has closed.
Gianni & Gaitano’s TTC Location Closes, No-Go for Glenwood
The News & Observer reported today that the Triangle Town Center location of Gianni & Gaitano’s closed early this week. The restaurant was padlocked by the sheriff’s department due to a lawsuit by the mall claiming $55K in back rent. The article also reports that the Gianni & Gaitano’s restaurant planned for 222 Glenwood is off, but the family’s remaining restaurants in the area are doing well financially.
Carver’s Creek Closed
Steak restaurant Carver’s Creek has closed. The restaurant at the 440/Capital Blvd intersection had a run of about 28 years, and was originally named Mountain Jacks.
ABC Store Replacing Former Fat Daddy’s Location
The building that once housed the North Ridge Fat Daddy’s location has already been razed. Plans were submitted this week for a new ABC store (.PDF) for the site. The new store will be four times the size of the current ABC store location next door.
