The meeting will be administered by the Downtown Parking Task Force in the city council chamber on the second floor of the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, 222 W. Hargett St.

For the past several months a consulting team has been working with City staff and the Downtown Parking Task Force (whose members are appointed by the mayor) to examine parking and transportation issues in downtown Raleigh.  The study aims to develop a plan for improving downtown access, including access to parking.  At the public forum, the consulting team will present an overview of the study findings and provide an opportunity for input from the community before completing the report.

Marshall Tucker Band Coming to Buckhead Saloon

Today’s music announcement begs these questions: Can Southern Rock bands be “legendary” without naming themselves after a non-band member? How about losing key band members to car crashes and disease throughout its history? Can the remaining members put a group together with new guys and still hit the road? The answer to those is emphatically YEAH, MAN!

It’s been 28 years since Spartanburg’s Marshall Tucker Band lost Tommy Caldwell to an auto crash. Toy Caldwell died in ’93 from heart disease, and George McCorkle succumbed to cancer last summer, but by golly, the band survives. See them at the Buckhead Saloon on September 13.

Note: Typos finally corrected. Thanks Jed! :)

Raleigh, Simpson Reach Plaza Agreement

WRAL is reporting that the City of Raleigh has reached a tentative agreement with The Simpson Organization, owners of the Bank of America building, which will allow construction to begin for the City Plaza project. The agreement prevents the need for the City of Raleigh to condemn the space needed for construction. A move for condemnation was approved by the Raleigh City Council on July 1 .

Yancy’s Officially Closes Doors

It’s official. Yancy’s Downtown has closed. Since filing for bankruptcy protection and realigning ownership in February, the restaurant has been operated as a rescue effort by Vango Foods. In yesterday’s mail, however, Vango received a copy of a court order terminating the restaurant’s lease. There will be a hearing on July 30, but most likely the outcome of that hearing will allow the landlord to move on with the space. Most likely a different restaurant will open soon after the new convention center’s opening.

Chuck Berry, Soul Asylum Added to Raleigh Wide Open

One of music’s all-time legends, Chuck Berry , has been added to the Raleigh Wide Open celebration, according to David Menconi . Berry, 81, stands as one of my personal favorite guitar players, as he helped to bring the 12-bar blues to America’s living rooms in the 50’s. Can’t wait!!

Soul Asylum, one of alternative’s bigger bands in the 1990’s, will also be on board for the festival. While David Pirner is no Chuck Berry, the band still put some good songs out there, especially before they got famous.

Yancy’s Expands Downtown Options

image Traditionally as new restaurants open and diners have more variety, the diners get so excited with their new options that they abandon what they used to love. Thankfully in downtown Raleigh there’s a place where you can still get some down-home cooking in a modern, clean setting.

yancys Yancy’s has been discussed a lot recently, and indeed, the restaurant is open . Ever since opening two years ago they’ve offered a nice lunch buffet and a plethora of sandwiches. The menu has been pared down, but still contains burgers, barbecue sandwiches, and some other staples. I chose the buffet option, so I could sample more. Here’s what I ate:

  • Tossed Salad – decent, basic salad bar with 4 dressing choices
  • Smothered breaded pork chops – a bit salty for my palate
  • String beans – excellent
  • Baked spaghetti – not bad
  • Barbecued pork medallions – excellent, almost western north carolina flavor
  • Red beans and rice – cooked for a while, these beans were about to fall apart
  • Stewed corn – fine
  • New potatoes – delicious
  • Fusilli pasta in red Italian sauce- surprisingly peppery.

While the food won’t be confused with Sarah Chase’s food in New Orleans, I still enjoyed my lunch (and isn’t that what it’s all about?). Food + Coca-Cola was $13 (about normal for a sit-down, nice, pleasant restaurant)

The restaurant was on the quiet side, but I was excited to be dining among Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornel West , who were in town on business. It was good to see that they were unaffected by erroneous reports that appeared online recently. (A business deserves the right to terminate underperforming employees. If these former employees wish to maturely prove their mettle, they can get on with their lives by helping some other restaurant in the area that needs excellent help.)

Yancy’s is an important part of downtown Raleigh’s fabric. Hopefully their business will get stronger as summer ends. Downtown needs a restaurant like this to maintain a healthy offering to everyone who’s hungry.

Boylan Bridge Brewpub Opens Soon

The wait is (finally) almost over. The much-anticipated Boylan Bridge Brewpub will open on August 25, 2008. Andrew Leager, owner of the Special Projects cabinet shop, decided a few years ago that he should take his beer-making hobby public. The brewing operation will be in-house, in the industrial setting of the brewpub.

As reported earlier , the pub was to be named “Sidetrack Brewpub” until Leager received notices from a similarly named operation in Chicago. Because the pub will sit adjacent to Boylan Avenue’s railroad bridge, in April Leager opted to change the name to one honoring one of Raleigh’s historic bridge sites (scroll to the bottom).
