Old Crow Medicine Show Coming to Cary

It’s rare that a song mentioning Raleigh isn’t embarrassing, but The Old Crow Medicine Show pulled it off with “Wagon Wheel”. That was 3 years ago, though, and The Show is concentrating on their new CD, Tennessee Pusher , which has gotten good reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone and others. The once North Carolina-based quintet plays Cary’s Booth Amphitheatre on August 10. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

Rock Hall of Fame Concert Announces Lineup

The lineup for the 2nd annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum concert has been announced. The event will take place on September 6 at Cary’s Booth Amphitheatre and features a more contemporary slant this year.

Among the artists scheduled to perform is 2009 Rock Hall Inductee Darryl McDaniels, best known as D.M.C . from the groundbreaking hip-hop group Run-D.M.C.; legendary female rocker Patty Smyth and her 1980s hit making band Scandal ; 94 East , the band widely credited with defining the “Minneapolis Sound,” and whose musical heritage intersects with that of Prince, Morris Day and Andre Cymone, among countless others; alternative rockers Blessid Union of Souls , whose hits include “Hey Leonardo (She Likes Me for Me) and “I Believe;” the pride of Long Island, NY — Nine Days — whose breakout hits “Absolutely (Story of A Girl) and “If I Am” vaulted the band to stardom earlier this decade; Midwestern roots favorite the Freddy Jones Band , whose recently released CD “Time Well Spent” has spawned numerous hits on college radio including the fast-rising singles “Home Thing” and “In a Daydream;” two Southern rock standard bearers that need no introduction — the Atlanta Rhythm Section and the Georgia Satellites ; and finally, Yes drummer Alan White’s latest version of perennial Rock Hall favorite the White Sox All-Star Band , which last year brought the house down with its nearly two-hour set of Yes, Queen, the Hooters and Jimi Hendrix classics.

Rick French, national trustee of the Rock Hall and annual benefit concert chairman, said that other guests have committed to perform and that adding a second stage on the amphitheatre grounds is a strong possibility as a way to accommodate the packed line-up of artists. French also added that plans are being developed for a fireworks display to close the show.

Tickets for the benefit concert go on sale Saturday, May 16 at all Ticketmaster outlets and the Booth Amphitheatre box office

Scott Crawford Named Executive Chef At Herons

The Umstead Hotel and Spa today introduced Scott Crawford as Executive Chef of its signature restaurant, Herons . Known for his refined American cooking, Crawford comes to The Umstead from The Georgian Room at The Cloister Hotel at Sea Island, Georgia, a Mobil Travel Guide Five-Star awarded restaurant.

"Crawford brings exceptional culinary talent, experience leading two five-star dining rooms, and proven professionalism to our luxury property," says General Manager, Jim Beley. "We’re confident that in Crawford’s hands our entire food and beverage program will be reinvigorated, reflecting our commitment to superior quality in product, presentation, service and concept; and furthermore, that Crawford will fulfill owner Ann Goodnight’s vision for Herons to be a beacon for food-savvy travelers and local diners alike.”

Crawford, a graduate of the American Culinary Academy in Tampa, Florida, enjoyed stints in his early career with chef Norman Van Aken at Norman’s in Miami and at the Black Cat in San Francisco before joining The Ritz Carlton’s Amelia Island Resort as their Chef de Cuisine, first of Café 4750, then in 2001 as Chef de Cuisine of their AAA Five-Diamond awarded dining room.

In 2004, Crawford earned Five-Stars from Mobil Travel Guide for his regional American cooking as Executive Chef of Woodlands Resort & Inn, the Relais & Chateaux property and Gourmand Dining Room located in Summerville, SC, before being hired away in 2006 to his most recent post as Executive Chef of The Georgian Room at The Cloister Hotel in Sea Island, Georgia. There, Crawford’s coastal Georgian cuisine earned critical praise, including five coveted stars from Mobil Travel Guide, “Best New Restaurant” in Esquire Magazine , and Wine Spectator featured it saying, “Crawford’s style of haute cuisine is buoyed by regional flavors and based on produce gleaned from small, area farms…”

When asked about his new position, Crawford explained, "This is a unique opportunity to create an authentic food and wine experience that reflects this spectacular contemporary hotel in North Carolina, and such a diverse and agriculturally rich area.” Crawford, whose first menu will be available in late Spring, explained “I believe in the chef-farmer concept — the importance of bringing together the nearby farmer who has a passion for organic produce or farm-raised meats with the chef who has a passion for optimizing rather than masking their natural flavors; this will be one of our priorities at Herons."

fye Crossroads Store Closing, 50% off sale

The fye CD and DVD store at Crossroads Plaza is closing, and apparently today is the last day. They are having an everything-must-go 50% off sale today. This marks the fourth major retailer to close in the center in 2008. Earlier in the season the center became a victim of the bankruptcies of Bombay Company, Tweeter, and Linens and Things.

The fye store is located in the center cluster (where the “food court” is).

Waverly Sold To Distant Firm

IMG_0190 The Cary shopping center that once looked like the prologue to a New Urbanist’s dream has been sold, according to Jack Hagel at the News & Observer . Durham’s Todd Zapolski has given up his aggressive dream for reorganizing the site into a North Hills cousin, and sold the property to RP Realty Partners , a Beverly Hills, CA firm. Zapolski told the N&O he was glad to be cashing out on the property that has had so much trouble gaining momentum. Zapolski did not sell his outparcels at the center.

As you may recall developers Zapolski and Rudd bought the odd-shaped site a few years ago and proposed partial demolition in order to facilitate high-rise hotel, condo, and office space. Z&R reorganized and in June I hypothesized that Waverly might have an advantage in getting a Dean & DeLuca store based on the fact that Leslie Rudd owns D&D.

Most likely the existing plans (.PDF) for the center will be scrapped. Who knows what RP wants to do with the property, but we all know how it goes with long-distance landlords. In an area of the Triangle that is dying for upscale shopping opportunities, RP will probably low-ball the entire project and continue to hold nearby residents hostage.
