"Our State" Magazine’s 75 Things We Should All Do
The new issue of Our State magazine features "75 Things Every North Carolinian Should Do." They’ve published a .pdf version of the fun-looking list complete with links and/or addresses and phone numbers. Maybe I’ll put a copy in my car!
Unfortunately one of North Carolina’s best-kept secrets didn’t make the list; the massive blimp hangar at Elizabeth City ( map it ). The website discoverec.org describes the treasure as:
Lighter-than-air ships have had a major impact on Elizabeth City’s history and economy. It is not uncommon to see Monster.com, Sanyo, Fuji Film, and other blimps flying high above the city as they make their way to the US Naval Blimp Hangar. Visitors wishing to tour the facility will get the opportunity to learn about the Navy’s lighter-than-air history in Elizabeth City as well as view the company’s plant. Tours are held on Wednesdays at 3PM and run 30-45 minutes. All tours need to be arranged ahead of time.
What would have made your list?
Tryon Village Coming Together
The rerouting of Cary’s Walnut and Holly Springs roads has created another major intersection (for the creation of another brick strip mall and full compliment of stand-alone pharmacies). The intersection’s NW corner features a new shopping center named Tryon Village. The lineup so far is a pretty nice one for a shopping center of its size:
- Yoho Asian Bistro
- Breugger’s Bagel Bakery
- Harris Teeter
- Walgreen
- Starbucks
- Impressions Hair Salon
- Rita’s Ice Cream
- Pinky Toes (girls clothing)
- Jill’s Beach
- Jimmy John’s
- Suncom Wireless
- It Figures
- Pacific Nails
- Ruckus Pizza
- Snap Fitness 24/7
About 2/3 of the center is leased, and it will interesting to see what Harris Teeter, Yoho, and Breugger’s do for the area. ( map it )
Greek Fiesta Coming to Western Blvd.
The former location of Papa Lou’s on Western Blvd will soon become another Greek Fiesta location ( map it ).
Satterly in as Frazier’s New Chef
Recently named one of Greg Cox’s top 20 restaurants in the Triangle, Frazier’s enters the new year with a new chef, Jeffrey Satterly. The chef “hails from some of the most prestigious and notable restaurants in the country, including The French Laundry and Bouchon Bakery in California, The Mansions in Las Vegas, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in London, Woodlands Resort & Inn in South Carolina, and locally at Herons in The Umstead Hotel and Spa.”
Wal-Mart Pulls SE Raleigh Plans
WRAL is reporting that Wal-Mart will not build a store that was planned for Sunnybrook and Rock Quarry Roads. Good news or bad news? SE Raleigh has a dearth of new retail, but is Wal-Mart what it needs?
Carolina Railhawks Schedule for your PDA
Railhawks fans who like electronic calendars rejoice! The Carolina Railhawks have unveiled their 2008 schedule and gogoraleigh has it for you in .CSV format!
Outlook/Palm Users:
- Create a new folder in your in Outlook calendar (Railhawks08, for example). Use the File | Import and Export… to import from “another program or file”, then “Comma Separated File (Windows)”. This will set up the Railhawks’ schedule in your new sub-calendar where you can make whatever changes you want.
- When you are happy with the way the subcalendar looks, change the calendar view to “Events” (instead of 7-day or 31-Day or whatever view you’re using). “Select All” from the list, and drag them over to your main “Calendar” (The Treo and other Palm Handhelds only sync to the main calendar – time for Palm to get with the program on that one!). If you want to keep your sub calendar intact, use Ctrl-drag instead of plain drag. That will create a copy of each event to the main Calendar and keep the Railhawks08 calendar in place. Sync your handheld to copy the events to the handheld.
iCal Users:
- Use iCalTextImport to import the .CSV version of the schedule.
Download railhawks08.csv
(right click on the link above and “Save As…”)
Note: Use at your own risk. I do not accept responsibility for any consequences resulting from errors in the schedule.
1/21/08 Update: Trisoccerfan.com has set up the schedule on Google Calendar , too.
Chick-Fil-A Coming to Cameron Village
It’s been a long time coming, but I’ve confirmed that Chick-Fil-A will indeed be coming to Cameron Village. A year ago word was that they would occupy the old dry cleaners site behind McDonalds ( map it ). There is no indication that anything has changed. The only clue I got was that the plans reveal a two-story store with a very glassy dining area that extends over the drive-thru line.
Raleigh Ranks As Third Most Wired City
Forbes Magazine has released its 2008 survey of America’s most wired U.S. cities , and Raleigh ranks #3. The list is based on the percentage of internet users with high-speed access, access to public hot spots, and variety of ISPs.
Raleigh Ranks #9 For Jobs
Forbes Magazine ranked Raleigh as its 9th best city for jobs in America , a list the city topped in 2007. The list is compiled by equally weighing five data points for each of the US’ biggest 100 cities. Raleigh ranked 54th in Median Household Income, 22nd in Unemployment, 23rd in Income Growth, 46th in Cost of Living, and 19th in Job Growth.
