I haven't been on Guilford's campus. Sounds great. Too, I think that these rankings generally include the most charming areas only. IMHO, on UNC's campus, the portion south of the belltower shouldn't make _anyone's_ most beautiful list. Conversely, so much of NCSU is hideous, but there are some key areas around Hillsborough St. that are really pretty. To be sure, the list features a lot of campuses with old buildings, but beauty CAN be done with new buildings. Smaller, older and/or equally historic campuses tend to get ignored – such as Salem College and Guilford College - the oldest and the fourth oldest colleges in North Carolina, respectively. It's hard to beat the Moravian charm of downtown Salem for an urban campus setting. Guilford College, on the National Register, has had its beautiful quad and most of its historic buildings since Its founding by Quakers in1837, its suburban campus a tranquil setting within bustling Greensboro. Wake Forest, founded in 1834, did not move to Winston-Salem until the 20th Century. I agree with the other poster that campuses such as UNC-Greensboro tend to also get bypassed. I think everyone can agree that Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest and Elon all have beautiful campuses but there are numerous equally attractive campuses in North Carolina and around the country. These lists sometimes overlook some of the prettiest, which may be smaller public or private colleges and universities, or happen to be Division III, where emphasis is on academics rather than giving athletic scholarships. Just a side note, I don't really think of Wake Forest and Elon as local. the Triad being a good hour to hour and a half from the Triangle.

Yeah, I'd probably put UNC a step above it (though I wouldn't put Duke above it) Still, State's brickyard area looks really good, and UNC's massive medical complex isn't exactly the most visually appealing thing. People forget there are parts of these campuses other than the main quad areas. Should mention that I live in Chapel Hill and work at UNC. This isn't a homebody talking.
