I-440 Widening Project Workshop Planned
The Department of Transportation is beginning some big project in the next few years. Not only will I-40 along the southern edge of Raleigh and the intersection of Jones Franklin and Western Boulevard be rebuilt, DOT is also in initial stages of a widening project for the oldest section of I-440, “The Beltline”.
The DOT will host a public workshop to discuss improvements to I-440 between Walnut Street and Wade Avenue on Monday, December 3 from 4pm-7pm. The meeting will take place at the Method Community Center, Pioneer Building (514 Method Road).
The stretch of highway is the last remaining 4-lane section of I-440, and features some dangerous intersections:
- Western Boulevard to I-440 W is a right merge into the I-440 passing lane
- Jones Franklin Road onto I-440 E has a very short acceleration lane
- I-440 W onto inbound Wade Avenue has a very short deceleration lane, and a tight, loop exit
- A short, uphill acceleration lane from Outbound Western Blvd onto I-440 E
- A cloverleaf pair of entrance/exit lanes on I-440 E at Western Blvd presenting in a short acceleration lane and a short acceleration lane, woven pair.
Challenges to the widening of this stretch include:
- A restrictive amount of land at the I-440/Western Blvd interchange
- Bridge overpasses by Melbourne Road, Athens Drive, and Jones Franklin Road that offer spans to short for widening. All three bridges will likely be replaced, which will solve the horribly dangerous pedestrian situation at Jones Franklin Road.
No doubt, the Western Boulevard interchange will be a complicated, expensive project. The solution will likely introduce at least one traffic signal to free-flowing traffic on Western Boulevard. Hopefully an inverted SPUI interchange will be implemented to minimize idle traffic times, but you know how traffic engineers have never met a red light they didn’t like.
The second challenge will be the Jones Franklin interchange. Jones Franklin will likely be widened south of I-440 in the moderate future, but the road crosses I-440 at an angle, and has a proximate intersection with Sumter Square apartments, complicating the intersection on the north side of the highway. A SPUI would not work here, unfortunately, so hopefully the Sumter Square access can be tied in with the exit ramp traffic from I-440 W.
For sure, there will be a lot of dirt and a lot of headaches in the coming years in southwest Raleigh. Hopefully engineers can design a solution that is not only safe, but also doesn’t create a heavy burden on traffic efficiency.
95X Hits Triangle Airwaves
For over 25 years now “Alternative Rock” and “Triangle Radio” have been like oil and water. While smaller cities (like Norfolk and Wilmington) around the country have enjoyed commercial alternative stations, Raleigh has been stuck with the same repetitious offering of country/classic rock/dance/adult contemporary…until now. 95.3, billed as “95X” debuted Friday and finally brings the Triangle up to date with other markets where “Mumford & Sons”, “The Temper Trap”, and “The Killers” aren’t met with strange looks.
The station is actually a Clear Channel offering of WDCG-HD2, broadcasted on a weak signal out of Apex. Chris Edge left KGSR in Austin to come run the station, and the plan is to get a second frequency in the western half of the Triangle.
For faithful readers of Pitchfork, or even avid fans of MTV’s 120 Minutes, the playlist will not be terribly interesting. Commercial radio stations will have their “play the hits” and saturation advertising weaknesses (“Hennnnnnrick…”), after all, however the playlist reads more like “new rock”, or essentially what 106 and QDR were doing at the moment when they coexisted, which is much needed. Before Friday, the newest real rock band played on commercial stations was the Foo Fighters, a band that has been around for 17 years. Welcome to the Triangle, 95X!
Eric Clapton/Wallflowers Coming to PNC Arena
In 1990 Eric Clapton said that his favorite guitar player of all-time is Buddy Guy. Well…speaking of Buddy Guy and the greatest guitar players of all-time…Eric Clapton will play Raleigh’s PNC Arena on Wednesday, April 3. The tour includes an impressive, to say the least, band that Clapton has assembled: Doyle Bramhall II (guitar), Steve Jordan (drums), Chris Stainton (piano and keyboards), and Willie Weeks (bass), along with newcomers Paul Carrack (organ and keyboards) and Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar).
The Wallflowers will open.
Buddy Guy Coming to Raleigh
Blues legend and guitar wizard Buddy Guy will return to the Triangle this winter! This time around he’ll come to the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium on February 20. Jonny Lang opens. Tickets are on sale now.
Torii Noodle Bar Now Open
A new eatery has just opened in Crabtree Valley Mall. Torii, a branch of the Kanki, now offers a modest selection of Japanese noodle and rice dishes. Entrées on the menu (pdf) range from $10-$13. The restaurant is located upstairs from the Kanki, next to the Glenwood Avenue entrance to the mall.
Jim Gaffigan Coming to Memorial Auditorium
A month ago we were the first to report that comedian Jim Gaffigan is finally bringing his White Bread Tour to the Triangle. However the venue has changed. The March 16 show will now be at Raleigh’s Memorial Auditorium. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (Friday, 11/17).
Brixx Coming to Cameron Village
TBJ reported yesterday that Brixx Wood Fired Pizza will open in the new Gallery at Cameron Village, the building replacing Balentines. This has been a long time coming. Back in 2008 it was rumored that Brixx was coming to the still-empty restaurant spot at Oberlin Court. Finally a proper Raleigh address will be a reality for the excellent, Charlotte-based pizza restaurant.
