Pulse 102 Hits the Airwaves

pulse102 Last night Curits Media flipped the switch on two area frequencies, simulcasting a station they call “ Pulse 102 ”. This format, aimed at women (25-34), is a streamlined blend of high-energy hits. Artists such as Lady Gaga, Enrique Iglesias, Usher, Katy Perry, and Ke$ha are featured on the station. The station debuts with 10,000 songs in a row and can be heard on both WPLW 102.5 (Hillsborough) and WWPL 102.3 (Smithfield).

Thank God we finally have a station that will play Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. I get so tired of turning on the radio and hearing Guster and The National.

  • Jenna

How is this different from G105?

  • Greg

Raleigh seriously needs a station like 106.7 the Penguin in Wilmington. Raleigh’s commercial radio STILL blows.

  • Lee

It is a different company that wants to compete with G105. Sounds like it may skew a little more dance-y than 105, but still pop and Top 40.

  • Lew

OMG – Raleigh could rival any market for worst collection of music stations.

  • CX

I think the problem with the Raleigh radio market is that there is pretty much one of each type of station, so its hard to find one station that fits nearly all of your tastes. I do enjoy the format that 93.9 is on now. With fewer stations there is also more need to play the most popular songs all the time without much pressure to play new music.

There are plenty of great stations in Raleigh – WKNC, WUNC, WSHA and more – but the ratings are what commercial stations make money on. They need to make money and the niche formats are not making money – I am sure many radio companies would love to tailor a radio station for every type of listener – but it just can’t happen..

G105 wins just because it is the only CHR in town.. this is great for the market..

I do like the Penguin in Wilmington, and think it would do well here. I thought I was getting jaded about radio until I found WBER in Rochester. I absolutely LOVE this station. They are squarely in the alternative realm without getting too much into boring Modern Rock (Audioslave) and Wimpster (Fleet Foxes). They stream online, and can be streamed using the Weather Underground and TuneIn Radio apps on Android and iPhone.

It’s stories like this that make me appreciate 88.1 WKNC that much more!

Now if the two stations only had enough signal
to cover the Raleigh metro. Anytime the band opens
the station’s already choppy signal gets worse!
A press release qoutes someone at CMG as saying Curtis
has been working on this for 10 years, that’s BS, Don
has not even owned 102.5 10 years. BS BS BS

  • Flipster

CMG should go back and finish the AM850 project they
started. How about some music maintainence on 850, when you hear the same songs at the exact sam time every day, and out dated forcasts in the evening, then there is a problem!

  • Lew

Dana – can’t believe you said WBER … I’m from there (I know – I can go back at any time). The collection of stations in Rochester … which is a VERY similar market to Raleigh … is much more diverse.

I understand the niche thing and I listen to the more independent stations but I have lived here for 15 years and would think that “The River” was the only station that has come close to a real station in my book. Pretty pathetic record – .5 of a station in 15 years. Not THAT out there as far as musical taste.

Oh, that’s awesome, Lew! I stream “The Only Station That Matters” in my office during afterhours and stream it on my phone in the car. It is a fun station because the current song may be just atrocious, but you know the next song will be good.

  • Jesus Cazares

this is the best radio in the world go 102 dont stop the music.

I wish they could expand their coverage area to Fayetteville. It could do very well here just as much as Raleigh. They’ve got the west and east Triangle areas on lock. I heard it in the north Fayetteville/NE Cumberland County the most before the signal faded out. At least I can get to hear the Max Martin and Dr. Luke-helmed songs that they’ve done for Katy Perry, Kesha and Britney Spears back to back rather than rival station G105 keeping them separate with the Howard Benson helmed rock hits. (They don’t like to play the dance numbers back to back on 105, let alone Katy, Rihanna and Lady Gaga back to back but Pulse does!)Martin and Luke have it locked down with the dance pop hits this year! I heard Pulse 102 as far as outside the Kinston city limits on US 70, then the signal faded out (was heading to New Bern). But they do few commercials, as short as 2 minutes every hour before getting back to the music. G105 goes 4 to 5 minutes with theirs! It’s like a nonstop club party the way they play the songs back to back for nearly an hour; the energy is so hot! I wish that station the best and I’ll listen to it on the times that I drive up north to Raleigh and the Triangle area!
