ECU Football Schedule for Sync and Downlaod

image ECU Football fans who like electronic calendars rejoice! I’ve uploaded the 2010 ECU Football schedule in .ICS, and Google Calendar formats. This way you can easily port the schedule over to your Android phone, iPhone, Blackberry, Google Calendar, Outlook, and more!

Without a doubt, the gogoraleigh ECU Football Calendar is the best on the web. The game locations are included, so devices that can automatically associate the location field with a map will offer these locations as hyperlinks. This is perfect if you are going to the game in an away city! With the synced versions of the calendar, gametime changes and television information are automatically updated as the information becomes available.

If you already subscribe to last year’s ECU Football schedule feed, you don’t need to make any changes. The new events now appear in the feed. For those just getting started with this highly efficient method of scheduling, consult the calendars at the gogoraleigh Calendars’ page:

Raleigh Wide Open Announces Music Acts

RWO5 The fifth edition of Raleigh Wide Open is just two weeks away, and it looks like the committee has put together a fun-filled afternoon of entertainment. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this year.

As before the even takes place on Fayetteville Street, from the Capitol to the Marriott. The street and all cross streets will be closed in order to facilitate four main music stages (Cherry Bounce, World, Raleigh Rocks, Free Spirit), as well as a beer tent and other entertainment venues and booths. Additionally the space in front of the convention center will be used as well as the new downtown Raleigh amphitheater.

My experience has been that the best place to park for the event is in the municipal parking deck at Morgan and McDowell. A short walk puts you right in the heart of the action. Other options are the parking garages lining Wilmington Street, but be sure to swing several blocks wide of the Fayetteville Street axis in order to avoid stagnant traffic and pedestrians.

The Raleigh Wide Open crew has once again put together a very nice flyer (.pdf) which includes a map of the RWO territory as well as a schedule of the day’s events. Gogoraleigh adds to that experience, however, by publishing this calendar to Google Calendar. Simply subscribe to the Raleigh Wide Open Calendar or just add events that interest you to your personal Google Calendar by clicking on the calendar link, selecting “Agenda†in the upper right, then selecting the desired events.

We recently went to Taste of Chicago and Milwaukee’s Summerfest, both events with rolling musical events at different stages throughout the days. Each even had its own iPhone app, and it made the event much more fun to select events beforehand and let the app plan the day for us. While this isn’t a dedicated app, it still affords you the chance to add events to your calendar and turn on notifications to remind you of them as they approach!

Time to Help Mo

mosdiner One of our favorite restaurants in Raleigh is Mo’s Diner . Back when the restaurant opened, Hamid and Holly were urban pioneers. They invested their livelihood into a little house at Moore Square, and it turned out to be one of the best restaurants in the Triangle.

The restaurant is still great as ever, but unfortunately Hamid is having health troubles and needs our help. Holly and Mo are not the types of people who want a ton of attention, but if someone’s biggest regret were that too many people loved them, they’d be the richest person in history. Like it or not, y’all 😉 , here is the letter the restaurant’s staff sent to fans yesterday, and information about the ways we can all help (in addition to eating at the restaurant, of course).

Dear friends,

On behalf of Hamid and Holly, we, Vanessa, Kenneth, Jim, Chris, Stan, Cecilia, and Maria, the staff at Mo’s Diner, want to extend our great appreciation for your patronage over the last thirteen years. We are writing this letter to inform you of some very sad news. Hamid has been diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer. It has spread to his spine, and most other bones in his body. He has not worked at the restaurant in some time, and he has been going to medical appointments daily to deal with his situation. Holly has been cooking, managing the restaurant, and accompanying Hamid to all of his appointments. In addition, Holly has been working a second job which provides health insurance. To make matters more difficult, the health insurance for Hamid’s illness has capped, and all of the medical bills are now being paid out of pocket.

We are launching a series of benefits for Hamid to assist in paying his mounting medical bills. We humbly ask that you join us in this endeavor through donations, attendance at the events, and any other means of assistance which you deem appropriate. With the help of Capital Bank, we have set up an account, Friends For Hamid, to manage any funds received for this cause.  If you can not attend an event and want to donate, you can send a contribution to Mo’s Diner c/o Friends for Hamid.

We have set up several sites to inform you about the upcoming events:

If you wish to send a comment to Hamid, inquire about the events, donate, or offer your thoughts about other things we can do for this cause, please send us an e-mail.

FriendsForHamid@aol.com

With some convincing, Holly allowed us to use this e-mail database to send you this message. We felt that sending it through the database of the patrons of Mo’s, it would reach the most people familiar with Mo’s and Hamid and Holly. Again, thank you for dining at Mo’s for all of these years. We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming events.

With our kindest regards and appreciation,

Vanessa Smith
Kenneth Strothers
Jim Knott

Cary, Chapel Hill Make Small Town List

Money Magazine has released its best small towns list, and two triangle towns are in the Top 40. Chapel Hill comes in at 40, and Cary ranks #23.

The results are interesting. Living in Chapel Hill is a distinct experience. All residents definitely feel the center of the town, the Franklin Street/Carr Mill axis. However Cary feels more like a series of subdivisions and strip shopping centers. Cary certainly feels different than Chapel Hill and North Raleigh, but does Cary really have a distinct vibe, or is it just a coincidental collection of new developments in Triangle, USA?

Hopscotch Announces Lineup

hopscotch The Hopscotch Music Festival is slated for the second weekend in September, and it looks like a fantastic collection of 120 indie acts that will be playing throughout downtown that weekend . I can’t put it any better than their press announcement:

Hopscotch Music Festival Announces Schedule for September 9-11, 2010

“A promising new festival … bound to embody its name†— The New York Times

The Independent Weekly ’s Hopscotch Music Festival, taking place in downtown Raleigh, NC on September 9 – 11, announces its inaugural schedule. Please visit the website for schedule and ticket info: http://hopscotchmusicfest.com/schedule/?info/schedule/

With 120 bands in 10 venues over three days, Hopscotch’s schedule reflects the festival’s goal of highlighting the Triangle music scene by pairing diverse, well-known national and international artists with a multitude of excellent local bands. Raleigh psychedelic lords, Birds of Avalon , will join the visiting Akron/Family and Sleepy Sun on Thursday, Sept. 9, for instance, while renegade alt-country bands Lucero and American Aquarium play at Lincoln Theatre. Local hardcore heroes Double Negative will join Toronto’s Fucked Up at Berkeley Cafe on Friday, Sept. 10, supported by the menacing Harvey Milk and one of Raleigh’s best young bands, Whatever Brains . Meanwhile, Raekwon will be headlining a special show with Grammy-winning Durham producer 9th Wonder at the Lincoln Theatre.

On Saturday, Sept. 11, locals Megafaun host a seamless night of improvisation and song at Kings with songwriter Marissa Nadler, free jazz masters Jeb Bishop and Ned Rothenberg and electronic standard-bearers Keith Fullerton Whitman and Greg Davis . That same night, bands as diverse as Tortoise, Bear in Heaven, Dungen, Woods, Dex Romweber, Pontiak, Washed Out, Kylesa and Weedeater will fill eight other clubs in downtown Raleigh.

The festival will be headlined by two nights in Raleigh City Plaza, downtown’s crown jewel, which opened last fall. Indie rock giants Panda Bear and Broken Social Scene will headline Friday, Sept. 10, with support from Triangle favorites The Rosebuds . Hip-hop’s most legendary group, Public Enemy , will headline with a rare full-band set on Saturday, Sept. 11. Los Angeles trio No Age and Raleigh’s The Love Language will open. Advance single tickets are still available to purchase at http://hopscotchmusicfest.com/

The response to Hopscotch since its initial announcement has been overwhelming. The festival has already drawn mention from The New York Times , The News & Observer , Brooklyn Vegan, Pitchfork Media, Earfarm, Consequence of Sound, Tiny Mix Tapes and a host of others. About the Independent Weekly

Steve Schewel and David Birkhead, both longtime Durham, N.C., residents, dreamt of founding an alternative newspaper in the South during the early ’80s. In 1982, they hired the first editor and did just that, publishing the first issue in April 1983. In the 27 years since that debut, the Independent —or the Indy , as it’s often called — has helped change the state’s press coverage and political culture by influencing the mainstream media, pressuring political leaders and moving its readers to positive action.

The Independent has also served as a consistent and strident cultural critic in North Carolina for decades, regularly winning awards for its arts and music writing, not to mention its long legacy of award-winning news coverage.

Greg Lowenhagen has worked at The Independent Weekly since 2009; Grayson Currin has served as the paper’s Music Editor since 2006.

Charlotte Light Rail is Today’s the Antiplanner Focus

One blog that discusses transit is the Antiplanner, where very few heavy rail projects pass the test. Today’s focus for the blog is Charlotte’s light rail service . The Antiplanner states that the Lynx system turned out to cost twice as much as projected, subsidizes 97% of the rider’s operating costs, and gave generous tax incentives for developers to simply shift development that was slated to happen regardless.

The article does not address how buses keyed into traffic signals along South Boulevard could have accomplished the same transit function during almost all periods during the year. Nor does it address the real estate value inflation for land convenient to Lynx line stops, making affordable living out of reach for many who could have benefited from a half-billion dollar taxpayer investment.

The article raises some good points. However Lynx has exceeded anticipated ridership numbers. The only question there is: were the numbers cooked to insure the investment’s “successâ€. More of a concern, though, is that the current Blue Line is only Phase I of a master plan that cannot be built with the system’s own funding. What’s next? Probably more sales pitches by government and transit officials to get taxpayers to expand a system which doesn’t even remotely come close to paying for itself…all in the name of “sustainable developmentâ€.
