Got To Be NC Features Double Ferris Wheel

skywheel Remember when the NC State Fair featured the iconic and deeply terrifying Skywheel? In the last 10 years or so that ride has been absent due to the contract with a new ride company at that event. Thankfully, though, the Department of Agriculture’s Got To Be NC Festival has a contact with someone who does have a double-ferris wheel, and it is out at the fairgrounds right now.

The festival runs through tomorrow (Sunday) and features free admission and free parking. Carnival hours are 10am-Midnight on Saturday and 10am to 10pm on Sunday. (Be sure to catch the lawnmower racing events tomorrow.)

Band Together Features Michael Franti

franti On Saturday evening Band Together NC will hold it’s Tenth Annual Charity Concert with Michael Franti and Spearhead headlining. The event features local and national acts and if last year’s crowd of 3,000 people is any indication, a large crowd is expected Saturday.

This year’s beneficiary is StepUP Ministry , an interfaith nonprofit organization that aims to give individuals and families a second chance in life by teaching basic life skills, offering a caring community, providing safe housing, and opening doors for self-sustaining employment. What’s truly impressive is that the group is able to rehabilitate people at about 6% of the annual cost of incarceration in North Carolina. StepUP has an interesting arrangement with Band Together this year. They’ve asked Band Together to simply match funding that StepUP has already found.

While Michael Franti will put on a great show, the opening acts are interesting, too. One eskimO , The Old Ceremony , Holy Ghost Tent Revival, and a special appearance by American Idol top-10 finalist Anoop Desai will open the show. Additional activities include silent auction, live painting and prize raffle.

As before, the event takes place in front of the Lincoln Theatre (126 E. Cabarrus St. – map it ). Doors open at 5 p.m., and performances go from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. (rain or shine).

Cory Doctorow Coming to Chapel Hill

FTW Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill will be hosting author/activist Cory Doctorow on Sunday (5/23) at 1pm. Doctorow will be reading from his new novel, For The Win . Doctorow is the noted Science Fiction author as well as open standards activist who recently created much controversy with his BoingBoing piece, “ Why I Won’t Buy an iPad (and Think You Shouldn’t Either)”.

With a key personality of the E.F.F. right here in the shadows of the House’s 6th District, one could only dream of a head to head debate between Doctorow and Paul Howard Coble (the guy who authored legislation, the DMCA , that makes it illegal for you to rip a DVD for personal use)…but I digress.

The Connells to Open The Walt

connells_BH First we thought it would be Paramore, then it seemed certain it would be the Backstreet Boys. Thankfully rumors were true: The Connells will first official headliner for the new downtown amphitheatre. The boys opened Walnut Creek back in 1991, but now, in the shadows of Boylan Heights , they will open another Raleigh amphitheatre on Friday, June 4. Admission is free ( more details ).

Other bands playing the venue that day are:

  • I Was Totally Destroying It
  • Mosadi Music
  • Old Avenue
  • Sleep Control
  • The Small Ponds
  • Th’ Bullfrog Willard Mcgee

This is exactly what needed to happen. It will be a great dry run for the house and will give the public a chance to feel out the venue for free.

Raleigh Ranks 4th in Food Spending

Flowingdata.com posted last week a graph showing food expenditures for many American cities. The graph is not only interesting for its presentation of the cities’ overall outlays and population, but also the distribution of dinging out vs. groceries. The average household in Raleigh spends $4,749 on groceries and $5,337. Austin is highest on the list with $12,447 in average overall spending. What doesn’t make a lot of sense is that Raleigh’s total expenditure of $10,086 is so much higher than Charlotte’s $6,306. Do we eat 60% more food than Charlotte? Hardly.
