Rescheduled “Visual Acoustics” Showing Tonight
The Nowell’s Architecture Movie Series continues tonight. “Visual Acoustics” will show at the Galaxy Theater in Cary tonight at 7pm. Tickets are $9 per person.
Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, “Visual Acoustics” celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman , the world’s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman, who passed away recently, captured the work of nearly every modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California’s modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images. Have a night out with an exceptional architectural movie!
Rescheduled from December (tickets purchased online last year will be honored).

Mod Squad Planning Charlotte Trip
The always-interesting Triangle Modernist Houses is sponsoring another exciting event. This time the tour goes to Charlotte on May 22 to tour the Design Within Reach store, the 1970 Mark Bernstein house, and IKEA. Some of the trip’s features include:
- Our own air-conditioned, restroom-equipped, internet-equipped luxury tour bus.
- Sodas, water, and both healthy and junky snacks provided on board the bus.
- Super green – think of all the carbon we’ll save versus driving down individually.
- Each person gets "storage credits" representing a total of six cubic feet of storage space under the bus. You can trade, buy, or sell credits to others. So, in theory, with enough credits, you could bring a couch home! Plus, all you can carry in your lap. Delivery is also available through DWR and Ikea.
- Lunch is on your own at the IKEA restaurant. Be sure to try the Swedish meatballs!
- Parking is $4 per car, paid separately to FastPark on exit. Dropoffs and pickups are ok, no charge.
Tickets are limited, and are $49.95 before May 1, $58.00 on and after that.

N.C. State Grad Loses iPhone 4G
Blogs have been on fire this week about the lost and found prototype for the next generation iPhone. Gizmodo posted the background story about the N.C. State grad who apparently lost the top-secret device in a bar on his birthday, and how they obtained it. How embarrassing. What will be interesting to see is if this disappointing, clunky, industrial design is, in fact, the final form factor. (BTW, just how many Gray Powells are running around this town? I think this is the 4th one I’ve encountered.)
Silversun Pickups Coming to Disco Rodeo
Good news! The
Smashing Pumpkins
Silversun Pickups
are coming to the Disco Rodeo. The show is Sunday, June 20 and Against Me! and Henry Clay People open. So far the show doesn’t appear on the Cat’s Cradle site, but likely that will be the source for tickets.
Piola Opens Today
The North Hills East location of Piola will open for dinner today. The pizzeria will open a Chapel Hill location in the new East 54 complex later this year.
Backstreet Boys to Open Amphitheater
It was earlier presumed that the Paramore/Tegan & Sara show at Raleigh’s new downtown amphitheatre (which should be named the “Sir Walter Amphitheater”) would the venue’s first. Then news swirled this week about the Backstreet Boys coming to the facility. Sadly, the “band’s” website confirms this harsh new reality: the new facility will be christened by The Backstreet Boys on Sunday, June 6. Perhaps this kick-off event should be called the “Sir Walter Folly”.
Wouldn’t it be neat if another concert were slipped into that weekend so that it could be the kick-off event? Perhaps a local promoter ought to have a Raleigh Music Showcase on Friday featuring bands from all eras: Arrogance, Glass Moon, The Connells, Dillon Fence, Tift Merritt, Annuals. Just an idea.
So far there are 4 events on the venue’s schedule, but many more events will be named soon. Given that the facility is targeting the same supply and demand as Atlanta’s Chastain Park and Charlotte’s Uptown Amphitheatre, it doesn’t take too much creativity to figure we will also be getting acts like Hall & Oates with Todd Rundgren, The Gipsy Kings, ZZ Top, Jethro Tull, Jeff Beck, KC & The Sunshine Band with MC Hammer, Earth Wind & Fire, and the Bamboozle Roadshow. Some of those acts are hitting Atlanta and Charlotte earlier than “The Walt” will be ready, so the logistics may not work out the get them, but stay tuned!
