The strong scent of urine (or is it mold) in the current location really overwhelmed me and other lunch buddies when we walked in.

WS began in Augusta, GA in 1962. Golden Corral started in 1973 in Fayetteville, NC. (That’s what their websites say).

Ponderosa and Bonanza started in the 1960s too. Ryan’s started in the 1970s. Not sure about Quincy’s, but you don’t see many of those now.

Sizzler kicked off the trend of chain, low-end steak restaurants in 1958.

It was a Western Sizzlin’ originally. That chain was a rip-off of Golden Corral, BTW, and was never as good. I kind of long for the old days of GC. The 7oz #7 was pretty good, but that tiny bowl of salad was always a big dud.

Sizzler had the most interesting menu, but it was so much more expensive than GC, so we didn’t go much. I miss the Steak & Malibu Chicken. It was pushing $9 while all of the GC stuff was $6.50-$8.00 each.

Anyone remember the Ponderosa and the Red Barn on Wake Forest Road? They weren’t nearly as good as Jack’s, which went in across the street and beat the pants off of those two.

Golden Corral was orignally another of those low-end steak chains (the “Golden Corral Family Steak House”).
