Raleigh Named 8th Best Value Destination

TBJ is reporting that Raleigh has been named the 8th best value destination for visitors. Raleigh beat out Chicago and Miami. Atlanta, Orlando, and Phoenix were the top 3 on the list.

That’s just nuts. I’ve been in Raleigh for 22 years, and I love living here but I’m always at a loss for what to do with people when they visit. I’ve always said, “Raleigh’s a great place to live, but I wouldn’t to visit”.

Maybe it’s a “value” because there’s nothing to spend your money on.

Looking at the rating, it made the list because it was cheap. Nothing to do, but it’s cheap…

There’s actually plenty to do in the Raleigh area and the nice thing is, many of your options are free which is one of the reasons it’s such a value. Check out visitraleigh.com for a listing of all of the current activities and events taking place daily.

There is truth in every statement made here. A visitor would have a very hard time finding his/her way around, but as a destination, Raleigh isn’t all that expensive. I wish we had well connected districts filled with attractions, but one museum here, one historic home there just isn’t enough.

Raleigh is a great place to live and a visitors can have fun if visiting someone who can show them around, but we are far behind many places. We are simply not meant to be a touristy attraction, which is fine with me, although some improvements can be made.

This is why we need some nationally known, tourist-based attraction. We need to steal the college basketball hall of fame and turn downtown in to a basketball mecca.

Since I have lived here most of my life, I have grown tired of Raleigh and not having enough options myself. I couldn’t see coming here other than on business or to visit friends/family. I dont know anyone whos ever said “well I think I want to check out Raleigh..”
It is a great place to raise a family (or was til the new school board, but thats another issue) and its a great place to go to college.
I will say that our museums are pretty cool and we have some great places to eat/drink, but thats about it.
I will say for Chicago not to be in top is ridiculous. I went this past summer and it wasn’t expensive at all. Plus Chicago actually has things to do.
Thankfully I finally figured out what I want to do and I am planning how I can move from here to the west coast in a bad economy.

The Triangle as a region has is not a total wasteland. We are a government and educational center. Therefore, most of our attractions are intellectual in nature, such as museums and history.

North Carolina Museum of Natural History
    North Carolina History Museum

Well said Bob. Don’t forget all of the activities provided by our universities. Along with several events, concerts and festivals virtually every week. Our dining and nightlife options are getting better every day and our numerous parks and greenways offer some great ways to explore the outdoors. By the way, again, most of these options are free or very inexpensive. Which was the whole point of this rating.

Don’t forget Marbles Museum & Pullen Park (when it re-opens).
