Hurricanes To Submit All-Star Game Bid

As reported by 99.9 The Fan, the Carolina Hurricanes will submit their formal proposal to host the 2011 NHL All-Star game while the team is in New York next week. Let’s hope this works out, because Gary Bettman, so far, is around 9 years late on his promise to hold the game at the RBC Center.

Dana, I will disagree with you on this. Bettman said if the Canes season ticket base could get to 12K and other items fell into place like 4 star hotels and place to hold the other stuff (convention center), Raleigh would be ready to hold the all star game. If you remember at that time, the canes were in trouble and it looked like it was a failed experiment. Yes, the Canes org and the NHL pushed the 12K STH much more than the other items but the Canes org was part of this. No secret, but the reason for Bettman to get involved was to get more people interested and to keep any momentum going. Not to mention the issues with the lockout and pushing back everything.

Had not those other items like Hotels and CC fallen into place, NHL owners, Sponsors, regional Executives, press from multiple countries and fans would have flown into Terminal A, “the blue monster”, stayed out at the comfort inn out by the airport (hey, there is a Waffle House next door) and had all the All-Star festivities at the Kerr Scott building. Welcome to effin Mayberry !!! Raleigh and NC would have been crucified in the sports and other press. We were not ready no matter how we thought we were.

It took longer for things to come to place (when the All-star game does happens) and Raleigh will be better off for it.

Raleigh is about 9 yrs late getting the area surrounding the RBC ready… not to mention the NCAA tournament won’t be coming back to Raleigh until something is done with that area.

Does anyone have any info on the hotel that is taking the place of the Trinity and TX tailgating lots on Trinity Rd. I can only imagine this would help attract those types of events.

I know that having the all star events and the arena near each other is great but I don’t see it as a killer. I have been to several all star events and many Super BOwl type games with villages/fan centers and not having it all together is OK. The key is to be able to inform the people of what is there and where to eat and party and have transportation to the locations (from North Hills hotel to downtown to CC). I went to one well known event and they had volunteer drivers and Frod sponsored cars and “connected” people just called a number and someone would come pick you up and take you to the location. For the game, busses took people from the main hotels and there were several of them. It was fine and fun.
