Awesome! Now, I’ll be able to get Piola in both Miami Beach and Raleigh!!! This is great news.

  • http://www.raleighmsa.com Ernest

I think that the Reynoldses (the people behind Quorum Center and Second Empire) are actually opening this restaurant. I wish them best of luck.

Dana, you know which place will continue to serve the best NY style pizza, though 😉 Do I have to say it?

  • gd

Fuhgeddaboudit pizza is the best NY pizza avail here right now…IMO.

  • Dana

I’ll have to try that, gd, because every time I eat pizza in Raleigh it is worse than the last pizza meal. I kept hearing people rave about Costco’s pizza and it was somewhat equivalent to low grade dog food.

  • R.U. Listening

I know Chapel Thrill has enough pizza to choke a camel, but this one looks fairly decent based on the pictures in an article from The Gothamist.

  • gd

Costco pizza is terrible. Its from Costco!
Lilys though is far from dogfood tasting.
NY style though, I’m all about Fuhgeddaboudit.

Nothing will touch the pizza in Chicago though i miss chicago.

  • John

Now we need someone to open a Pizza Rustica DT for late night, by the slice, gourmet pizza on the cheap. It’s from SouthBeach and it’s really, really good.

I want someone to sell a pizza like you would find in Florence. One that looks messy and not each piece of stuff on it place to cover the entire pizza. One where the sause runs all the way to the edge and cooked. I was in other parts of Europe lately and ate one that was close but still not like the Yellow Bar in Florence. We will see on this.

I cringe each time I see a new pizza place opening in Raleigh. I’ve scoured almost every corner of Wake County (I do say – almost) and there’s only about 3 or 4 places I’ve found that I would dare recommend to anyone looking for a good New York style pizza (I’m not so much into the Chicago deep dish with the 5 inches of dough on the bottom). Every single other place that I’ve been to has disappointed me. Not to sound disparaging, but I also learned not to trust any of the “natives” for pizza recommendations, as they tend to have a completely different idea of what a pizza is.

  • OTB & lovin’ it

As a transplanted New Yorker, I’ve tasted my share of dreadful excuses for NY style pizza, like pineapple & ham toppings that are popular in California, mystery lumps in Cincinnati, & Costco & Sam’s Club, yuk!
Fuhgeddaboudit is really good, but a little stingy with toppings. Also, Casalinga in Mini City has a great pizza.

  • Dana

Does anyone know of a place that has thin, crispy crust with a small, crunchy bead of crust around the perimeter? It seems like everyone has a large land of doughy crust around the edge.

  • neal2zod

Dana – I’m sure this will get some groans, but Brixx pizza might be what you’re looking for – their crust is exactly as you describe. It’s definitely not for everyone (especially if you see all the negative reviews out there), but 1) I love thin crust, 2) they always have beer specials, and 3) there’s always a buy-one-get-one-free pizza coupon floating out there somewhere.

  • Dana

Thanks, Neal. I haven’t tried Brixx yet. (I’m still crossing my fingers that they secretly want to come to that empty spot at Oberlin Court (Oberlin/Wade)

  • hackles10

^ I heard rumors to that effect 8-10 months ago….but it doesn’t seem like there is any forward momentum. That side porch and huge glass storefront would be great for a pizza and beer establishment.

  • Ken Metzger

Frank’s pizza. I am not sure how it is still not well known. (only problem is their toppings are canned)

  • http://www.raleighmsa.com Ernest

    Dana,

Come on, you know very well where you can get this kind of pizza, especially if you ask for a “well-done” pie 😉 Don’t make me remind you

  • Dana

Haha, Ernest! To tell you the truth, I’ve only had pasta dishes at Piccola Italia. We’ll definitely have to come for pizza. (I’ve had so much bad pizza I’ve gotten gun-shy).

  • RonT

I would say my favorite pizza in the Triangle is N.Y. Pizza (they have 3 locations, I go to the one on Tryon in Cary). To me, it is comparable to what I get when I am in NYC. Nice thin crust, fresh (not canned) ingredients like mushrooms.

I have to say that I have only been to Brixx once, but thought it was very good. Not what I think of as “NY pizza” though.

I used to be a fan of Lilly’s @ Five Points, but I just could not stand the atmosphere or service any more. I never knew until I walked in what head-banging music would be blaring. They lost me when one of their own employees walked past us on their patio and intentionally knocked over an ash tray. I am not sure what point he was making, but it was enough to push us over into the “never going back” category. Also, by this point in time it should be no surpise that they will be busy, but rest assured the line at the register can be almost to the door and they do not seem to pick up the pace in the least. I may just not have been cool enough for them all along. My loss [sic].

  • gd

To go or delivery is the way to go with them RonT.

Excited to try Piola – have heard great things from a few friends. I agree RonT – Lily’s customer service needs lots of improvement. To go or delivery for sure, gD.

San Carlo in North Raleigh has great pizza. It is family owned, the service and attitudes are great. It is in the shopping cenetr near Wake Maed North near Harris teeter. I like hand made pizza, thin crust, fresh ingredients only. You can get lots of unusual things like clamari on the pizzas as well. I love Costco but would never eat that pizza. It is one step removed from the pizza you used to see in Zippy marts that had been sitting under the light all day.
