Final Normal Weekend Packs Big Punch

It’s the final normal weekend for the Fall, and there is plenty to do in Raleigh. Tonight in Raleigh, two very different music acts take the stage at 8pm. In Memorial Auditorium it is Frankie Valli while over at the Lincoln Theatre it’s Robert Earl Keen’s stage. On Friday night Memorial Auditorium welcomes Abba Mania while on Saturday night it hosts the Guy Fieri Roadshow with special guest Walter Royal (Angus Barn Chef).

The Carolina Hurricanes recently won, so perhaps they can hit a streak when they host Toronto on Thursday and Boston on Saturday. Also in West Raleigh is the Carolina Roller Girls’ Bout 6. It will be in Dorton Arena on Saturday night. On Monday night, the UNC Tar Heels will host Gardner-Webb.

Saturday morning marks the event we’ve all been waiting for…Sue Stock’s coupon class. Today is the last day for registration for the morning event taking place at Meredith College. Oh yeah, there is also some parade that morning.

Seriously, the Raleigh Christmas Parade kicks off at St. Mary’s at 9:30am on Saturday morning. The route proceeds down Hillsborough Street and then all the way down Fayetteville Street for the first time in ages. The forecasters are calling for terrific weather, so get there early! My advice is to stake a place near the Char Grill. That is where the bands are still getting warm while marching, and the sound is the best. (Bands don’t like to play around the Capitol’s three turns, and the sound on Fayetteville Street canyon is not good).

Fun Week Ahead for Raleigh

There is plenty to do in Raleigh this week. Let’s start with sports, where the pervasive question is: Can anyone in West Raleigh win . Tonight Sidney Lowe’s Wolfpack will take a stab at it. The preseason pick for the ACC cellar begins the season tonight against Georgia State. The 2010 season will be an experiment of the “addition by subtraction” paradigm, as the Pack lost much of their scoring as well as the bad attitude left in the cupboard when Lowe came on board.

Both UNC and NCSU football will host ACC foes with possible bowl bids on the line. NCSU hosts Clemson in the “Textile Bowl” at Noon Saturday and UNC hosts the long-bombing Miami Hurricanes at 3:30 Saturday.

And then there were those Hurricanes of Carolina. Winless in their last 13 games , the squad hangs their hopes on none other than Friday the 13th to break the darkest stretch in the franchise’s history. The Canes will also host the Minnesota Wild in a rare matinee game on Sunday at the RBC Center.

Sunday is also the day for the Old Reliable Run, and the weather looks nearly perfect for the event. Late in the afternoon, UNC basketball finishes out the weekend hosting Valpo at the Smith Center.

Friday night will be a busy one on the music front. In Durham Steve Miller will be playing at the DPAC while The Cult will be rocking our heads off at the Lincoln Theatre. Also that night, the Travelin’ McCourys will be at Fletcher Opera Theater. On Saturday Dan Auerbach is at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro. In the theater the Beatles show Rain starts its week-long run at Memorial Auditorium.

If none of that floats your boat in this wet weather, then perhaps a swing through North Hills on Saturday’s glorious morning will do it for you. That’s when the year’s final Midtown Farmers Market will be going on.

City Leaf Collection Begins (Began?)

The City of Raleigh will officially begin their leaf collection program on Thursday. The collections will start in the Northwest corner of the city, but cover each area once before Christmas, then a second time after New Years. Residents are asked to rake leaves into piles at the curb rather than in the street. Normal weekly Yard waste collection will continue throughout.

This is strange as the leave collection team passed by my house one week ago, when we didn’t have many leaves accumulated. Perhaps they started early? Perhaps they were just warming up, getting the trucks and their routine down pat?

Raleigh’s Busy Week Ahead

Raleigh continues to deliver with another busy week ahead. First we’ll start with arts, as another big First Friday is coming to downtown. If you are into modernist houses, there is another swell dwell event as this Triangle Modernist Houses tour features 3 houses of local, well-known architects.

In the comedy arena, Ronnie Bullard is playing Charlie Goodnights all weekend while Dane Cook is at the RBC Center Sunday. In more traditional theater, South Pacific continues its run at Memorial Auditorium.

There is plenty of music to go around, again. Wednesday night moe plays at the Lincoln Theatre. On Thursday, Sid ‘N’ Susie featuring Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs will be at the Arts Center in Carrboro. Also on Thursday Casting Crowns is playing the RBC Center. The Troika Music Festival is in Durham on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday there is a Fight Cancer walk the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk to Cure Diabetes at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre, highlighted by a performance by Patty Loveless. On Tuesday night the Lincoln Theatre welcomes Matisyahu.

Sports? Yeah we got that, too. The last non-basketball weekend (that we have to put up with) has a lot to offer as the #22 Virginia Tech Hokies come to Greenville for a nationally-televised ESPN showdown against ECU on Thursday. Tech is favored by 13.

On Friday, the dreadful Carolina Hurricanes, on pace to earn a franchise-worst 44 standings points this season, host the Toronto How-can-anyone-be-playing-worse-than-us-es. The loser of this game will certainly be even too rank for the hounds after their post-game release.

The story warming the cockles of the nation’s hearts, Duke Football, continues as the Sagarin #63 Devils visit the Sagarin #48 Tar Heels for a sold-out game in Kenan. Even though the Duke fans can rot in Hell, they have themselves a darned good coach who makes it tough to pull against him. UNC is favored by 10. Also on Saturday Maryland visits N.C. State, the favorite by a touchdown.

Whatever. The roundball starts Monday as UNC hosts “Isiah Thompson’s” FIU squad on Monday to open the season (ESPNU). State and Duke start later in the week.  Sidney Lowe has just one week to diagnose just what the hell is wrong with the water supply in West Raleigh.

WRDU Moving to Conservative Talk

Today TBJ is reporting that WPTF has “lost the contract” to carry the Rush Limbaugh program beyond December 31. Because Curtis Media also owns 101.1 FM and 850 AM, the show will not be going to either of those stations, given the “lost” language. Speculation is that ClearChannel is getting ready to convert one of its FM stations, like 93.9 or 106.1 to talk radio, most likely conservative talk. Clearchannel did recently launch www.rushradio945.com for its new format coming (January 1) on a Greensboro station, so it makes it interesting that Curtis Media has bought the URL www.rushradio1061.com , most likely in a blocking move since ClearChannel, not Curtis owns 106.1.

NOTE: 11/3/2009 – this move was, indeed announced late Monday afternoon . WRDU will carry Glenn Beck at 9am, Rush Limbaugh at Noon, and Sean Hannity at 3pm.

(Please feel free to comment, but spare us pro/anti-Rush rhetoric . The point of the post is the impact on local radio.)
