Sports Radio Shakeup Begins Monday

Triangle sports radio enters a new era tomorrow. Capital Broadcasting will run sports radio on two signals, 99.9FM The Fan and 620AM The Buzz, mixing local and syndicated shows. To corral all of the coverage, a new website for the stations has launched, ESPNTriangle.com . Here are the two stations’ typical weekday schedules:

99.9 The Fan

6am – 10am Mike & Mike
10am – Noon The Herd with Colin Cowherd
Noon – 3pm David Glenn
3pm – 7pm Mark & Mike – The Insiders

620 The Buzz

6am – 9am Adam Gold & Joe Ovies
9am – Noon Dan Patrick
Noon – 2pm Jim Rome
2pm – 4pm The Scott Van Pelt Show
4pm – 7pm Primetime with the Packman

Im an avid ESPN watcher and huge sports fan but this merger hurt sports talk radio in the Triangle IMHO. Im an occasional listener to Adam Gold and am glad his show will remain. But the shows that we get in replacement is a perfect example of how national brands can handcuff a local product. Now there are shows I like such as Dan Patrick , Mike & Mike, and SVP (the last two simulcast on basic cable anyways) and shows that I prefer not listen to (Mark Packer among others). My major issue is the shows/personalities that provided a diverse and different view on sports were replaced with more homogeneous shows, that not only generally have the same opinion across the board but their opinions are force fed to us through other mediums (i.e. TV or print). I will continue to listen to Adam Gold and David Glenn when I can. But Triangle sports radio as a whole, just took a huge step backwards.

So, I knew this was coming, but was dissapointed not to find Jim Rome on this afternoon. I figured they ditched him altogether, but I was listening at about 2:15, so that explains it.

I seldom listen to all three hours of Rome, as he can get tiresome at times, but it is nice to have the entirety of the show be carried.

Since I have XM, all of the ESPN Radio content is duplication for me, but I realize that many do not have that choice.

I guess it is nice to actually have a couple of decent sports talk shows on at the same time at various times of the day.

I agree with you, Jay. The net change here (from 3 stations to two) is that Morgan Patrick and Bomani Jones are nudged out.

I really could not care less what is being said on national sports talk. It seems that all they talk about, year round, is the NFL.
