Halifax Park Community Center Plan Seeks Input
The City of Raleigh Parks & Recreation Department is planning to renovate and expand the facilities at Halifax Park and Community Center located at 1015 Halifax Street. The Community Center was originally built in 1972. The Raleigh Housing Authority provided financial assistance for the building construction to insure community facilities were available for recreation and other activities for the area residents and other City citizens. The 3.94 acre site is owned by the Raleigh Housing Authority. The Center houses a gymnasium, weight room, game room, meeting room, restrooms, office and storage. Other park amenities include play equipment, basketball courts and a multipurpose field.
The area surrounding Halifax Park and Community Center has experienced significant growth and change and is expected to continue developing into the future. The current facility is in need of renovation and expansion in order to accommodate the recreational and educational needs of the changing neighborhood. In addition to serving local residents, the center also expects to provide programs and services at the improved Halifax Park and Community Center for the business community in downtown Raleigh. Total funding of 3 million dollars has been budgeted in the 2007 Bond Program. Clark Nexsen, a local architectural and engineering firm, will be conducting an assessment and feasibility study of the facilities to address short-term needs and to plan for future growth opportunities to meet long-term recreational and educational objectives.
As part of this assessment and feasibility study, the City needs public input on the facilities and programs at Halifax Park and Community Center. A public meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 23 at 7:00pm at the Capitol Park Community Center, 871 Harp Street, Raleigh, NC 27604.
In addition to the public meeting, planners prepared a survey questionnaire to assess needs planning for the renovation and expansion of the facilities. Surveys need to be completed by April 24.
