Beck’s Cutlery Going Out of Business

The area’s best knife store is going to close. Beck’s Cutlery, in Cary’s MacGregor Village, is running a fantastic sale right now. Problem is that when they close, our options will suffer.

This is not good news. That is a great store and a great place to have knives sharpened. I had wondered how they were doing.

But Dana…they are not in Raleigh…isn’t this a Raleigh blog…LOL

  • MikeB

Nooo! It was my go-to for knife sharpening. Every 6 months the edge needs to be completely redone and I don’t know of anyone else that puts a proper edge on by hand. I will definitely check out the sale (been thinking about replacing my old 10″ wusthof with something new anyways)

Bummer. I hope someone can recommend another place for knife sharpening. They also had a lot of great items and product knowledge you won’t find anywhere else.

This is truly a loss. Ronnie and Patty have always been good to me when i’ve been in their shop. I’ve followed them from their cary location, out to smithfield and back to cary. I need to go by there and say bye. :(

I took knives for sharpening there and they came back to me with the shiny area all scuffed up. The knives were sharp but that’s careless sharpening in my opinion. Any chef I know holds their knives like gods in their kitchen. Scuff the shiny part and you start messing with friction, tearing of foods, slippage etc. as the knive goes through what you are cutting. I’m extremely glad I did not take my really nice set there, I would have been very upset. I’ll work with the manufacturer if my nice set ever needs sharpening.

Went by yesterday after work, ronnie said they’d be open for probably 3 more months. 20% off of white tagged items, 40% of red.

  • MikeB

Picked up a boning knife and other supplies today. I was quite surprised that pretty much all of the kitchen knives were 40% off retail. I’ll probably be back to grab a Japanese blade, some steak new knives, and some utility knives. Also, I asked about sharpening and he will likely continue to offer the service either through direct contact or through a small shop at the Farmer’s Market, so that is good news.

I have been going to Becks cutlery before since they first started. I hold Ron to be a great friend of mine I spend alot of my free time (and money) in there, I made an attempt to buy the buisness from him but was unable to do so. I will never take any of my knives or my wifes knives to anyone else but him. He is one of the biggest if not the biggest dealers in this region and the store will be missed greatly. I think he will set up a sharpening booth some place in raleigh on the weekends or something. Tell all your friends to come get there knives here asap.

I too have been going to Beck’s for knife sharpening forever. Picked up knives today and was told they will continue to sharpen knives at another venue (to be named).

  • Roger

I believe their new venue will be at the Raleigh Farmer’s Market. Indeed Ronnie and Patsy are “the best”.

We have been going to Becks for many years. So sorry to hear about their closing. I will definately visit them at the Farmer’s Market. Best knife sharpening service in the city.
