The Decemberists Coming to Memorial Auditorium

Booth Amphitheatre Sets Diverse Schedule
The early returns are in, and Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre seems to be off to a very diverse start.
April 18: Great Grapes! Wine, Arts, & More – Bull City Syndicate & Part-time Blues Band will play.
- April 28: Kings of Leon (w/ The Walkmen)
- May 17: Carolina Bluegrass Festival – The Del McCoury Band, The Tony Rice Unit, Rhonda Vincent & The Rage, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and more.
- May 21: Larry The Cable Guy
The venue made a big change in the offseason. It is no longer booking primarily through Live Nation (who is set to run the new downtown Raleigh amphitheater). The “preferred provider” now is Outback Concerts out of Nashville. Expect to see more acts from Outback’s stable coming this summer, such as B.B. King, Frank Caliendo, Trace Adkins, John Prine, Slipknot, the Bob & Tom Comedy All-stars, and Death Cab for Cutie.
Triangle Grille Closes
The Triangle Grille in Cary (next to the Circus restaurant) has closed, and the restaurant’s space is available.
Ethan Allen Coming to North Hills
The space that formerly housed Storehouse and a clothing store is being prepared for Ethan Allen’s move. A couple of weeks ago the walls dividing the space were removed; a sure sign that something was afoot with the space. The sign is up now confirming it.
The move is an interesting one as “Glenwood ?North?” has been a hotbed of furniture retailers. The new space is only about 75% the size of the current Glenwood Avenue location, but has excellent viability to upscale shoppers attracted to North Hills.
As a side note: the clothing store located in the southern corner of this space may have had the best clothes around, but did they have any idea how awful their lighting was? Who in the world thinks that metal halide gymnasium lighting makes merchandise, especially clothing, look good? (the same goes for all of you retailers who are switching over to compact fluorescent lighting, by the way)
Epona & Oak Coming To City Market
A specialty boutique is coming to downtown Raleigh’s City Market. Epona & Oak plans to offer “a fresh concept in wellness and shopping. Featuring the lines of independent designers and artists, the boutique carries home accessories, apparel for women and men, jewelry, handbags, gifts and paper goods. Secluded in the back of the store, Epona & Oak features a wellness area that provides a wide array of massage therapies and energy work.”
Beware of Triad I-40 Signage
We’ve discussed interstate highway signage here before. However no situation in this state is as screwy as the signage and routing of Interstate 40 through Greensboro. For decades Interstate 40 proceeded through a narrow section of road in southeast Greensboro westward by Four Seasons, and onward to Winston-Salem. Over the past decade sections of Greensboro’s perimeter highway, I-840, have opened and now offer travelers many new options.
When the southern half of I-840 opened, all west and southbound traffic on I-40 and I-85 (respectively) was routed onto the new road. In recent months, though, only I-40’s westbound route reverted to the old, much quieter highway.
The problem lies with Eastbound I-40 traffic. From the gas farm west of Greensboro, I-40’s east bound traffic is guided onto the new perimeter highway. After skirting south Greensboro, it picks up Northbound I-85 traffic and eventually merges back into the old highway on the east side of Greensboro (near Replacements). From the western gateway the old road is labeled 40-Business, and has a green badge.
There are two important points here. Westbound I-40 traffic is guided to the old highway, while Eastbound I-40 traffic is guided to the new bypass highway. Huh?
Additionally, on the west side of Greensboro, traffic staying on I-40 is instructed to remain in left-hand lanes while exiting traffic (continuing on the old highway) exits to the right. The eventual pathways cross, so the intersection is exactly the same as ours at the Wade Avenue exit on I-40. The big advantage with the interchange’s signage in Greensboro is that only one pathway carries a red and blue interstate badge. The exiting route carries a green badge. Because only one route is clearly marked with a typical interstate badge, it is obvious to drivers which of the two options is correct for staying on the current interstate. A similar situation exists on 421 west of Winston-Salem. Drivers have two options; I-40 (red/blue badge) and 40-business (green badge). For the casual driver, these two interchanges are extremely easy to navigate.
If the DOT insists upon marking the Wade Ave exit with a “To I-440” badge, they should consider renaming I-440 to “40-Business” and applying green badges. This would allow I-40 traffic to clearly understand the difference between the two roads.
New Ice Is Down
The RBC Center melts its ice only twice a year; once after the hockey season, and once for the circus. Now that the circus’ run is over, the RBC Center is laying down new ice, and the primary layer is down. Next is the paint. Not only will the official lines for hockey be painted, but also the 4 feature ads displayed near center ice. It will be interesting to see if ad revenues for these spots will continue to flow.
Check out the RBC Center webcam to see the latest status of the new ice.
