Soleil Redesigns
The planned 43-story Soleil Center is going back to the drawing board, according to the N&O’s Jack Hagel . Due to the current lending market and sluggish sales in high-end condos, the project will be built in two phases. The sorely-needed 300-room, 14-16 story Westin hotel portion will be built first. In the future, should the condo market the return, the project could be topped with 25 more stories of condos.
What happens now, architecturally speaking? The project will hopefully be a graceful structure in its interim. If it is a obviously truncated design, then what happens if the high-end condo market doesn’t return? Is Raleigh stuck with yet another ugly high-rise?
Some critics will celebrate in victory as they feel this is an admission that the Soleil concept was flawed. However one cannot say that we should extend the city’s agreements for people like Greg Hatem and for the Reynolds (who were not able to sell condo portions of their projects downtown) due to the “rough economy”, while also saying that Soleil isn’t being built as-planned because it is a flawed concept. The economy is the overriding factor with all of today’s incomplete projects.
Hopefully all of these projects’ complete build-outs will see the light of day. It would be nice for people to have as many housing choices as possible in this market.
Chick-Fil-A Files Site Plan for Cameron Village
The long-awaited Chick-Fil-A in Cameron Village took a big step forward a few weeks ago as the site plan (.PDF) has been submitted to the city. The plan calls for a 6,285-square foot, two-story restaurant which will replace the former optician and dry cleaners building behind the McDonald’s in Cameron Village.
The site plan’s most interesting aspects involve traffic flow. In order to accommodate a snaking drive-thru queue around the building’s southeast corner, a miniature traffic circle will be formed around the stairway that once went down into Nowell’s. The queue proper can handle 16 cars, none of which cross pedestrians’ paths and parking spaces. The real question remains…how are they going to handle 100 cars? (because this place is going to be so popular it will cause traffic snarls well into Oberlin Road once it is open!)
Bruegger’s on Glenwood Now Open
The Bruegger’s Bagel Bakery in the base of 222 Glenwood is now open.
Sheri Leaving WRAL Morning Show
For the past 12 years at WRAL-FM, Sheri Logan and Bill Jordan have maintained the classiest, wittiest, and top-ranked morning show in the Raleigh market. On December 19, however, Sheri will step away to spend more time with her family. All the best, Sheri, and thanks for 12 great years.
Any thoughts (beyond Madison) who might fill the spot? My bet is on WRAL finding talent outside the market.

Reynolds Tower Approved, Gets Financing
The Raleigh City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to allow developers David and Ted Reynolds to move forward with plans to develop the Reynolds Tower, a mixed-use project planned for 301 and 309 Hillsborough Street. Since the last council meeting regarding the project , the developers have secured financing and commitment by Regions Bank.
Hillsborough Street Partners has agreed to purchase the City-owned property at 301 Hillsborough Street. Closing will be done by Dec. 31. Other deadlines set by the City of Raleigh still loom, however. Site and foundation work must begin by February 3, and construction completion must be by March 15, 2011.
Canes Fire Laviolette, Bring Back Maurice
The Carolina Hurricanes today fired coach Peter Laviolette and will have a press conference at 11:30 to announce his replacement (updated: see below). Laviolette was 167-122 and led the club to its first Stanley Cup in 2005. However the team barely missed the playoffs in each of the last two seasons and is currently in that same zone, 8th place in the Eastern Conference.
Thanks, coach, for a fun ride. We wish you the best, and know that you’ll land on your feet somewhere else.
WRAL is confirming that the replacement will be former Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice. Since leaving Raleigh Maurice had worked his way up in the Toronto Maple Leafs system, and was the Leafs head coach for approximately two years until he was fired during last season.
Bravo Coming to TWC
It’s been a long time coming, but the much-requested Bravo channel is coming to Time Warner Cable’s local service on December 31. The channel will be carried in SD on channel 72, replacing the Standard Tier location of Inspiration/EWTN (These channels will continue to be carried on 195 and 194, respectively).
Raleigh Spared from Spears Tour
Today Britney Spears announced a 27-city concert tour, her first in five years. Luckily the Raleigh area was not included.
