Cause you know everything is for sell in the Basnight/Rand/Easley/Perdue way of governance.

I've seen the state get two consultants to do a task that normally one state employee would be expected to get done in the same turnaround time....and you just know those consultants are getting paid more, too.

It would take less effort and money to train us - state employees - rather than calling for outside help all the time. Salary-wise, state employees are not the most privileged workers. At least there is some stability to talk about. Not much in terms of benefits, IMO.

With the number of people working under them and the budgets they deal with, I hope they have people with the experience to do so and salary to keep them there. I would say on a whole, state employees make less than others. I am not sure people can complain (not saying your are) about state services and then complain about salaries. No body works for free or stays when tugged at jumping over to private. I see so many people in private industry who make much more than $100K doing whatever and I know I am also paying for it. I know the difference between public and private but either way, I pay for it. When I see people from my bank staying in 4 star hotels, going on junkets, working 9-5, making huge bonuses, getting free tickets to everything and throwing big “shindigs” , I know I am paying for that in fees and prices and then I see a state employee being paid average/below average for that level of employees/budget, I have more problems with the first situation than the last......no matter if paid by tax money or not. No matter what, you get what you pay for and for every "bad state employee", I can show you corporate waste that you pay for every time you step out the door. I speak of this as a MBA in the big corporate world who has friends/family who work for the state in Executive/management positions.

I work at a university, and I am on there. I suspect that SPA employees are listed and EPA (most faculty/higher-ups/some managers) are not. I believe EPA employees, by the nature of that classification, are paid a good deal more than most in the state system, so that would bring the average up a bit if they were included.

I guess the state has wide berth of fields. They do hire doctors, lawyers, college deans, and maybe some tenured engineers that make those 100k+ salaries. (And they're still usually paid less than their private-sector equivalent.) And of course department heads and directors probably hit that high salary range too. But certainly the everyday rank and file state employee is definitely in the lower-to-middle class range. Make no mistake about it.
