The East Glenwood South needs a lot of redevelopment, IMO. West At North is a wonderful addition, but alone it can't do everything.

I've been trying to find out what would be on those first two (three?) floors. Sounds like the whole building will be a great addition to downtown.

Here is an excerpt where we hear more about the other two venues: On the first, second and basement floors of the building, Moshakos, a native of Greece, is considering two concepts, including one that would serve small plates of Mediterranean food and at least 50 different wines available by the glass. Moshakos is considering opening a smaller restaurant with a wine cellar in the basement. Doesn't sound to me very chain-type venues. Sure, they may not be affordable to all, but they will be unique concepts (relatively speaking). Personally, I am happy, although - as I mentioned earlier - I would rather see a larger building replacing the existing one.

I respectfully disagree with them, and I think some of the readers have kindly responded along the same lines with the way I would reply. To some people diversity is only a part of the whole. Chicken wings, cheeseburgers and beer is not part of it, I guess :( Like DPK posted, anyone can go to Glenwood South, pay some money and bring the diversity he/she wants. Nobody stops us from walking the walk instead of talking the talk. One thing that people rush to ignore is that the new owner is going to bring three venues, not just one. While Carolina Ale may be your typical sports bar, we still don't know what the other two will be. Certainly, Lou Moshakos, who is definitely a good businessman and not your run of the mill wanna-be restaurant owner, knows how to address the needs of the Glenwood South crowd and bring something that will a) attract more visitors and b) will be in sync with the existing fabric. Until I hear more about the other two venues, I will keep the most important part: three more destinations will be added in an underutilized spot. I don't care about sports bars, but I would celebrate the expansion of this local chain to our city's primary entertainment district. Personally, I would think that attracting a destination like the good-old Seldom Blues in Cary - no longer in business - would be a major plus. Retail will be hard to bring, until 222 Glenwood, West At North and 712 Tucker are fully occupied and established. Maybe a bookstore-cafe would be nice. Also, a good Italian restaurant, a decent pizzeria, a good pastry shop (similar to Hereghty's in Raleigh and Old Europe Cafe in Asheville) and a vegetarian place (like The Laughing Seed in Asheville) or something identical to Zest Cafe and Hot Pointe Cafe (both in North Raleigh). Even a good Greek restaurant (since Lou Moshakos is Greek) would do. I meet a lot of people who ask me about good Greek food in Raleigh. Of course, we can think of many nice, outside the box ideas, but you get the picture.

This new vision is yet-another step to the right direction, although I would love to see a taller structure replacing the existing two-story "box". Maybe something around 10 stories, with a top-floor venue. Maybe a hotel would do well in that location...
