Contemporary Art Museum Has New Design
The planned contemporary art museum for Raleigh, CAM, has been through many iterations. First there were a couple of residential tower concepts ( 12-story , 7-story ). Then there was the Magnolia Bud concept. Now this (.PDF). Tucked away at Harrington and Martin Streets, the latest plans call for a 3-story space that excels in its light space and minimalist lines. map it
I suppose we must start somewhere. The current plan certainly low-balls where we want to be as a creative city. Perhaps this could be a stepping stone for a great facility in the future. It’s just kind of hard to see our city’s downtown art project, admired by so many, being outdone by Roanoke, Virginia’s new Taubman Museum of Art ( article )

Raleigh has always erred ont he extreme side of conservative. This city has always been afraid to make a statement. Raleigh has some of the mundane and boring architecture for a city this size. The only saving grace right now is the shimmer wall of the convention center. The RBC Plaza, even though it is tall, is striking in its sheer ugliness. The new Marriot downtown should have taken some pointers from North Hills Marriot. the one downtown looks like a Hampton Inn on steroids. I seriously doubt we ever see anything cutting edge built downtown.

A: From my knowledge (which is quite close to the source of design), it’s only 2 stories.
B: For everyone’s knowledge….these images are MONTHS old. Things have progressed, as it should in any project and the design will be much nicer than what you see above (renderings from June - http://www.newraleigh.com/articles/archive/raleigh-contemporary-art-museum-4/

durham is kicking raleighs butt by embracing the creative class and it makes me sad because now i find myself wanting to live there instead of here…and i love it here!
whats the deal with us? why cant we just take some chances and do something that would set us apart? the museum in roanoke looks beautiful. i havent heard anything about roanoke since i lived close to it 20 years ago. suddenly, i feel like i should check it out when the museum opens. IM SURE IM NOT ALONE! it will do wonders for tourism.
the cam plans look like an elementary school. conservative doesnt mean boring. i would be just as excited to support a minimal, beautiful design.

Jedidiah,
Newraleigh’s article only displays 2 of the images shown here and doesn’t have the floorplan. Take a look at the images. They said,”Cutaway drawing showing the three levels of the museum.” I can’t wait to go to Roanoke in November. I’m going to a wedding up there.

bunson - is there a contemporary art museum not funded by Duke in Durham?
Jed - Thanks for the update. It’s good to hear your optimistic promises. I was getting worried that the next iteration of this thing would be an old taco truck on cinderblocks.

I just realized that everyone is considering the “mezzanine” as a third level. So we’ll compromise and say 2.5 levels.
