Bojangles Reopens
The Western Boulevard location of Bojangles has reopened after a six week renovation. In June the restaurant had a small water heater fire , but only needed minor interior work to be operable. This particular Bojangles location opens at 5:30am.

Battistella’s To Make Final Push
Greg Cox is reporting that Battistella’s New Orleans Kitchen , in the Crabtree Inn (formerly Ramada Inn) will be closing on September 27. The hotel will soon be razed and replaced by two hotels, apparently. He also says that while Brian Battistella is looking for a new location, he also is going to really ramp up the menu in this location’s final days. I have heard good things about this restaurant and haven’t had a chance to get over there.
Raleigh Riddle
The Ruby Tuesday restaurant at Crabtree is decorated with tons of Raleigh memorabilia. One print on the wall caught my eye; a painting of Christ Church from some point in the late 1800’s. The question that even stumps some of the church’s clergy: Where was the artist standing when painting this picture?
Answer coming later this week
Ciao Bella Tour Hits Raleigh Today
Ciao Bella , New York’s original gelato, brings its “Discover – Savor – Share” tour to Raleigh today as they continue toward giving away 100,000 free samples this summer. “We’re excited to bring our brand to North Carolina to sample a southern audience,” said Ciao Bella Vice President of Marketing Deborah Holt. “Coming off our successful hometown tour kickoff in New York, it will be fun to share Ciao Bella with a whole new market.”
The tour is spending a month in North Carolina beginning with retail and community events in Wilmington and driving on to charities, concerts, and additional stops in Charlotte and Raleigh. Among the highlights are the Cape Fear Blues Festival in Wilmington, the Journey and Rascal Flatts concerts in Charlotte, and the Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival in Raleigh. The Swirl will also be visiting A Child’s Place in Charlotte, bringing sweet treats and smiles to homeless children attending the charity’s summer camp. Visits to Harris Teeter stores and other local retailers across all three markets are also planned.
Check them out at:
If you miss them today, they will return on Saturday for the Beer, Bourbon, and BBQ Festival at Cary’s Koka Booth Amphitheatre
City Amends Empire Agreement
Today the Raleigh City Council decided to amend an agreement with Empire properties concerning the development of Site 4. In a detailed presentation, Empire’s Greg Hatem gave a progress report on the site’s planning stages, and proposed a slightly different agreement, which was accepted by the city council. Empire’s problems with the previous agreement were not over the amount of subsidy for the street improvement project near Site 4, but rather, the timing of the payment. Empire prefers to pay it’s promised $50,000 goodwill gesture to improve Site 3’s curbline at the time of purchase for Site 4. The previous agreement demanded payment when work is begum. Empire also proposed to uphold the November deadline for site plan submission, apply for no future extension requests, and to remove the minimum requirement of 20 condominiums for the project.
Fountain Shows Artistic Potential
John C. Dvorak has posted a clip of a fantastic water feature in a Japanese mall. Water falling from the framework spells messages and spits out graphics. I immediately thought of the much wrangled City Plaza yet to be installed on Fayetteville Street, and how easy it is to find ourselves low-balling its design.
After removing two thirds of the water features through value engineering, the plaza is slated for one water feature, currently envisioned as a “miniature Bellagio”. Is the Mini-B what would really draw people from across the country? Probably not. A fountain much like the one shown, however, would. Let’s be imaginative and spend all of that money on a place that really makes an impact.
Ashley Christensen Featured in Bon Appetit
The September issue of Bon Appetit magazine features dozens of restaurants from across the world. One section of the issue focuses on six up-and-coming women chefs, including Raleigh’s Ashley Christensen. On page 142 readers can find Ashley’s “Sneads Ferry Clams with Late Summer Squash, Pistou (France’s pesto), and Marinated Grape Tomatoes”.
Christensen is included in the issue for good reason. Visit either of her restaurants,
Poole’s Downtown Diner
and
Enoteca Vin
, to see what all the fuss is about.
NOTE: VarmintBites is reporting that Christensen’s last day at Vin was Friday. She’s focused on Poole’s now.
