Kiva Grill Replaced By Little Sibling (Road Trip)
It’s always bitter sweet when a good restaurant dumbs itself down, but still does a good job. I was able to spend last week in Wilmington, and hit all of my favorite places. Kiva Grill was always at the top of our list. They did upscale southwestern in a way nobody in Raleigh does, pushing their way toward southwest fusion as much as any in this region. The southwest tempura rolls were fantastic, as was the Mexican barbecue sauce and jicama slaw in one particular burrito. It quite obvious that the dishes were very labor intensive.
Four weeks ago the Kiva Grill owners converted the restaurant to its sister concept, K38 Baja Grill . K38 leans much more toward California Mex with a host of quesadillas, burritos, fajitas, and tacos. I enjoyed the Mission Style chicken burrito, which was good, but not terribly different than 48,000 different burrito shops in Raleigh.
The restaurant was struggling with a few items that night, too. The fryer was sending out shiny-wet, greasy tortilla chips, and the water was terrible. Others at our table enjoyed their stetson rolls and quesadillas. However the star item at the table, as unbelievable as it may seem, was the fried chicken sandwich found on the children’s menu. Served on a large, fresh bun, the sandwich features an excellent chicken batter, lettuce, and an outstanding mayonnaise.
Everything about the experience except for the decor is a step down from the Kiva days. The menu is chock full of items priced between $7 and $12, down from Kiva’s $15-$23 price point, making the restaurant a little more family-friendly. The lower price point is matched by the clientele, too. The bar is now hopping with those overly tan, beachy, party bums that are everywhere down there.
There are nightly specials, however we hit the best of the rotating bunch: Wednesday $1 Taco Night. The full-sized tacos come filled with beef, chicken, or steak and are excellent. For those loving soft tacos, they are available for $2 on taco nights. I could have been happy ordering five crunchies and a salad.
K38 is going to do well as they are one of the few bargain good meals for people eating in the Porter’s Neck area. While there were a few kinks early on, the restaurant should be able to match the success of their Oleander Road location. It’s just sad to lose the choice of going to a unique restaurant that makes one enjoy their time away from Raleigh.
ABC Store Replacing Former Fat Daddy’s Location
The building that once housed the North Ridge Fat Daddy’s location has already been razed. Plans were submitted this week for a new ABC store (.PDF) for the site. The new store will be four times the size of the current ABC store location next door.
Marbles Hosts Kickoff to Kindergarten
On Sunday, August 17, from 4pm – 6pm, Marbles Kids Museum will present the 5 th Annual Kickoff to Kindergarten. The event is designed to help kids and their families transition into school and make this a very memorable milestone.
Participating rising and current kindergarteners can go through their first lunch line, board a real school bus, get their very own library card, create make-n-take crafts, experience the museum, and enjoy entertainment from the kids band Big Bang Boom. Marbles will give away book bags full of school supplies to the first 750 kindergartners in attendance. There will also be a special visit from PBS’ Super WHY!
Parents will have the opportunity to get their last-minute questions answered by kindergarten teachers and school and health officials. Marbles Kids Museum and its partners have publicized this event to economically disadvantaged families in order to welcome them into the school system and help offset the expense of school supplies.
Michael Buble Coming to RBC Center
If one more person tells me,’It’s RAH-lee’…
Slick crooner Michael Buble (and his knock-out band) will return for the first time in 2 years to Raleigh. This time around he’ll be at the RBC Center on October 3.
This time around, can all of the ladies in the audience promise to behave themselves? The April 2006 concert was completely out of hand. Buble handled it with charm and class and left us all wanting more.
Buble had an interesting night, himself, pronouncing our city “RAL-ee” (rhyming with “pal”) repeatedly. It wasn’t until his sweep through the Memorial Auditorium aisles that people like my wife (pictured) corrected Buble. When he returned to the stage, he said the quote above and the whole house broke down in laughter.
Tickets go on sale next Friday, August 15 at 10am.

Art On The Edge Coming to Downtown
A new art festival in downtown Raleigh is set to begin August 21. The Art on the Edge event sent out a press release that describes the event better than I can!
Strange Fruit and Architects of Air will be part of Art on the Edge, a new art festival set for August 21-23. The internationally acclaimed groups will bring their talents and art forms to the festival, which will be held on Lichtin Plaza and inside the A.J. Fletcher Opera Theatre at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts.
Art on the Edge is a 3-day contemporary arts festival celebrating the vibrancy and variety of today’s art scene. From debut performances by the state’s leading theatre companies to concerts by progressive musicians to performance art that tests boundaries (and gravity!), Art on the Edge invites the audience to explore the richness of contemporary art.
The festival will kick off with the spectacular installation of Levity III, a 10,000 square foot luminarium created by England’s Architects of Air. The luminarium is designed to give visitors an immersive and reflective experience. Through labyrinthine tunnels and inspiring, spacious domes, visitors move in a medium of saturated and subtle hues. Australia’s famed Strange Fruit, whose remarkable style of work fuses theatre, dance and circus, using a unique elevated medium, will perform three shows Saturday, August 23, outside on Lichtin Plaza. The featured show, “Swoon” will captivate the audience as the artists bend and sway while perched 14 feet in the air.
