iPhone Mania Sweeps Triangle

Though there weren’t many people camping out for iPhones this year, the rush on the Apple devices has been stronger than expected (even if Apple continues to lie about the “1 million” units “sold”). AT&T stores are out of stock and taking names on an estimated 20-day waiting list. The Apples Stores, on the other hand, are announcing availability at 9pm each night on their website , and doing first-come-first-serve sales the following mornings.

There are none available in the Triangle’s two stores (Crabtree and Southpoint) as this is being posted, but check back nightly for an Apple Store update.

FWIW – The status shown on Apple’s website is completely unreliable. On Tuesday it was showing ‘in stock’ at SouthPoint the next day, when I went, they had nothing in that days shipment. On Wednesday night they showed no stock for Crabtree, but on Thur, but I called them, and they just got some in – I rushed over and go one – I was about #12 in line, but the line grew while I was there and they turned folks away.

If you want a phone – call each Apple store @ 10:00 AM (opening) and 11:15 (they should have their shipments by then) and ask what they have for the day – don’t use the website. Hit ‘5’ to get to a person once their message starts.

Stop chasing the phone, let it come to you. Visit an AT&T store, let them order one and deliver it to the store. They quoted me 10-21 days in Chapel Thrill, and I got mine in 3.

On your note about Apple “continuing to lie”, is it abnormal for sales to be calculated the way in which they were? I understand tracking directly their unit sales in retail stores – that makes sense and should be quite accurate. But like album sales, aren’t shipped units normally tracked as “sold” once they leave the warehouse? They were purchased by a vendor, so in Apple’s eyes, they were sold, correct? I’m not necessarily defending Apple, I’m just curious.

I listen to a slew of netcasts, but I believe it was Buzz Out Loud show #765 (if it wasn’t that it was TWiT or some other tech show released around the 14th) where there was a discussion about how “Apple tracks sales differently”.

Anyone want to tackle Apple’s claim that these phones do “push email”? Don’t get be wrong. I’m going to get one, but some of the ways Apple does things drive me batty.

Push email (and calendar, and contacts) works great for me from Exchange Server. Not sure about MobileMe, but Exchange ‘push’ works great.

Only downside is it really kills the battery life – I’d guess it uses 25-35% more battery when doing push vs syncing a few times an hour.

Let me know if you have any specific questions on push, and I’ll try to answer.
