WCPSS’ "A Chorus Line" Coming To Memorial Auditorium
The Wake County Public School system’s School-To-Career program will present the musical “ A Chorus Line ” for four shows on September 12 and 13 in Raleigh’s Memorial Auditorium.
The show is being directed by Terrence Mann , who actually played Larry in the 1985 movie version of the show. In addition to his heavy involvement with North Carolina Theatre, you also may remember Mann for his Tony Best Actor nominations for his work in “Les Miserables” and “Beauty and the Beast” in New York.
The School-to-Career program is a system-wide effort to blend relevant “real world” experience with the classroom curriculum. It’s a collaborative effort between teachers, administrators, students, parents, and business people. For more information on the program, see their website .
Tickets for the shows are available through Ticketmaster .
News & Observer Reorganizes Local Coverage
It’s already starting to happen. The homogenization about which I theorized last week is in its first steps. The N&O is moving most of its unique, Triangle-related material to a revamped “B” section of the paper named “Triangle & Co.” (is that short for “county” or “company”?). All they have to do is move the high school sports coverage to “B” and they’ll have a paper with all but one section that can be exactly reproduced in Raleigh and Charlotte.
From today’s Local section:
“Starting Monday, your City & State section will become Triangle & Co., a brand-new, larger section that combines the best of our local and business coverage. Monday through Saturday, Triangle & Co. will bring you Triangle and state news stories, roundups of local briefs, national business briefs, stocks, Under The Dome, your favorite columnists (sic – there should be a comma here) and more. As part of the new section, you’ll now get a page of business news on Mondays. Starting July 6, the Sunday City & State section will become Triangle & State and will include a new Sunday Under The Dome column. The popular Life Stories feature will move to the Monday Triangle & Co. front starting July 7…”
Hard Times Cafe IS Open
Contrary to a vicious rumor going around, the Hard Times Cafe on Glenwood Ave is indeed open.
HBO To Chronicle UNC/Duke Rivalry
After much success profiling the Michigan/Ohio State football rivalry, HBO has decided to continue their exploration of college rivalries with a one-hour documentary about UNC and Duke. The special will air next February and will likely have a more creative name than it’s tentative title,”Duke vs. North Carolina”.
HBO Sports president Ross Greenberg is toying with the idea of an advanced screening in Raleigh. HBO would split an auditorium in half with UNC supporters on one side and Duke supporters on the other. Stay tuned for more info…
Ryan Montbleau Coming to the Berkeley
The Ryan Montbleau Band will be playing at the Berkeley Cafe on July 24.

Get Discounts for "Peter Pan" Starring Ira David Wood
Peter Pan will soon fly into Raleigh’s Memorial Auditorium as part of North Carolina Theatre’s 25th Anniversary Season. The production stars Ira David Wood (of “A Christmas Carol” fame) as “Hook” and runs from July 12-20.
Tickets are still available thru Ticketmaster, but gogoraleigh readers can get 20% off by using this form (Word File).
Seeing Wood is always a special opportunity, and this production, I’ve hear, is no exception.
Cameron Village Corner to be Redeveloped
TBJ reported (with a rendering ) on Friday that Crescent Resources , a real estate corporation out of Charlotte, has plans to redevelop the largely-vacant Cameron Village corner at Oberlin and Clark/Peace with a residential and retail complex. It will be one of Crescent’s first true mixed use projects.
The project must first pass muster with neighbors who have a reputation for fearing change. While the structure is reported to be up to 120 feet tall, the height is likely determined to be from the project’s true base, the parking area for the old Balentine’s lower level, which is roughly 30 feet below the Oberlin Rd. elevation.
We’ll learn much more about this project on July 15 when there will be a public hearing at City Hall.
New Phish DVD Filmed in Raleigh Storm
On August 5, Phish ‘s new concert DVD named Walnut Creek hits store shelves. The concert actually occurred on a stormy night in 1997. Though there was torrential rain, the band went ahead and pushed through. As distant lightning lit the sky, it created a unique show; one to be remembered.
According to AllAboutJazz.com , the 2-DVD set has more than 2 1/2 hours of 5-camera footage and Dolby 5.1 sound.
Phish Dry Goods is now accepting pre-orders for the release.
