Blount Street Commons Breaks Ground
The exciting redevelopment of four major downtown Raleigh blocks officially began today. Though site preparation has been ongoing for months, city officials were on hand this morning to break ground. The overhaul involves a 19-acre tract bounded by Peace, Person, Lane, and Wilmington Streets in Raleigh.
Centered around 25 historic houses dating to the mid 19th century, the Blount Street Commons project will add enough new construction to form a classic neighborhood including carriage houses, row houses, stacked townhomes, garden flats, and urban lofts. There will be almost 500 condominiums, and over 100K square feet of new retail space when the project is completed.
Market Place Signing Tenants
The new office/retail complex at Lake Boone Trail and Nancy Ann Drive is almost complete. The center will be called The Market Place, and will be anchored by JK’s Steakhouse , formerly of North Hills. The complete tenant list is not being publicized yet, but it appears that both Camille’s Sidewalk Cafe and Salsarita’s will open a location in the center. There will also be a FedEx store and a LASIK eye surgery business.
The project is being developed by Oaks Construction out of Cary. People are most likely to have heard their radio advertising during UNC sports games, as they are an active developer of dental offices in the region. There will probably be a dentist who signs for space in the complex, but to be honest, that 1 mile diameter is absolutely saturated with dental offices. No word on when business these and other businesses will begin opening, but the center looks almost complete, so finish work is all that most of the spaces need.
Coffee/Hookah Coming to Peace Street
Hue Retail Taking Shape
Word is that some of the retail spaces in the upcoming Hue condominium project have been leased. Apparently a vegan restaurant, a day spa, and a pizza delivery service are the first to jump at these retail openings.
More good offerings are expected. The increase in walking traffic afforded by the relocation of Campbell Law School will create much street-level activity.
Mac To Go Under Knife
The Peace Street location of McDonald’s was gutted in 1986 in order to offer drive-thru service. After 22 years, it’s time for the site to be completely rebuilt. Word is that current location will close on September 30 after which a major renovation which will add 547 square feet and a new, swoopy look. It was previously thought that the site would be razed, however the artist renderings and site plan (.pdf) strongly hint at a major renovation instead.
Fosters American Grille Resurrects in Cameron Village
There once was a time, just before Glenwood South really took off, that Clarence Foster’s Raleigh branch was the place to go out in Raleigh. If you went around Christmas, you’d just about see anyone you ever knew. Times moved on and the owners got itchy to retheme the site. After an extremely expensive overhaul, the restaurant reopened as Nelson’s, aiming at high-end seafood lovers. The concept fell short of expectations and after an reorganization of ownership and modest renovation, Fosters American Grille quietly opened on May 8.
The new menu packs in much variety at prices directly aimed at the Village Draft House’s market. In addition to predictable appetizers and salads, there is an excellent selection of sandwiches, pastas and entrees. The restaurant also offers delivery service to a reasonable area (call 821-5969 for details)
It remains to be seen if Fosters’ nightlife will ever return to pre-Glenwood era levels, but you never know. For now, though, it seems the restaurant is finally addressing areas much-needed by the family audience that cannot support fine dining.
Mannheim Steamroller Coming to Memorial Auditorium
The already-busy December season for the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts just got tighter. Christmas tour for Mannheim Steamroller will hit Memorial Auditorium on December 1. Tickets are $44-$86 and are available through Ticketmaster .
Martin Street Pizza Open
After years of waiting, Martin Street Pizza is now open. In a casual, urban, chic setting, MSP offers a simple menu of pizza, salads, and a few sandwiches. While the room is a little sterile now, it won’t be long until the funky employees put a lot of personality into this soon-to-be mainstay of downtown fast-casual dining.
Peace China Now Open
Seaboard’s newest addition, Peace China, is now open. The small Cheap Chinese restaurant is similar to others of this ilk that you’ve seen around, and this location has a definite “A” sanitation grade. I spoke with a man who seemed to be in charge, who explained that he basically defected from the Panda Express restaurant chain to open this stand-alone shop.
The menu is similar, as is the quality of the meat, to the Panda Expresses that I’ve seen. My order of Szechuan Beef was served piping hot with fried rice. The flavor of the sauce, especially with the rice, was delicious, but the meat had that suede texture that I’ve only experienced at Cheap Chinese outlets. I must admit to momentarily asking myself,”Is this beef?”
The menu has an excellent array of variety, and the prices are unmatched in downtown. Starting tomorrow Peace China will offer their lunch buffet. This won’t be an all-you-can-eat operation. Rather patrons can select from two or three of the hot food items and make their own combos. Sounds interesting.
Next time I’m going to try wonton soup and a chicken dish in my ever-going quest for a lovable, reasonably-priced Chinese restaurant in Raleigh.
