Solving RBC Center Ingress (Part II)
Part one of this series introduced a simple plan to solve the RBC Center’s West side ingress problems. Each lot on the arena’s West side would have a dedicated lane and would, therefore, have uninterrupted traffic flow.
The RBC Center’s East parking lots are accessed by the three-lane Westchase Blvd. Because one of those lanes has to be designated for egress during ingress events, the traffic flow on the East side of the RBC Center has major inefficiencies. While there would not be a bottleneck, it would be impossible to dedicate a lane for each East side lot, Lots 1, 2 and 3, using the existing lane configurations. With a simple redesign of about 500 feet of curb on the arena’s West side, all lots could have a dedicated ingress road.
Part I advised dedicating a lane for Lots 4, 5, and 6. Lot 3 traffic must use the East side. By expanding capacity on the West side, however, Lot 3 traffic could use Edwards Mill Road and leave Westchase Blvd’s two ingress lanes for Lots 1 and 2.
In this plan, Lot 3 cars would use Edwards Mill Road’s leftmost usable southbound lane, turn left to the leftmost lane, and left onto the current center lane of Karmanos Blvd. The path is shown in green. Cars would proceed past Lots 6, 5, and 4 to the Lot 3 entrance.
Lot 4 cars would be one lane to the right of Lot 3 cars, and would also proceed on Karmanous Blvd. They would use the current right lane past Lots 6 and 5 to the entrance of Lot 4.
Accommodating Lot 5 cars is the key to this plan. They would use the lane to the right of Lot 4 cars (Lane 2 of Edwards Mill). They, too, would turn left onto the RBC Center’s main drive, then left into a new, rightmost lane on Karmanos Blvd. This 150-foot lane would extend only to the first entrance of Lot 5. This path is shown in pink.
Lot 6’s cars would enter their lot as described in Part I, however they would not access the RBC Center road from Edwards Mill. They and the VIP cars would bypass all traffic on Edwards Mill Road by using the rightmost lane. As shown in aqua, they would then turn left onto Trinity Road and left into Karmanos Blvd’s center lane. VIP’s, as shown in dark blue, would use the rightmost lane and bypass Lot 6 traffic.
The dedication of a lane to a lot is the key to evenly flowing traffic. The best way to achieve quick access and happy customers is to appropriately use the 5-lane Edwards Mill Road. With a simple extension of a lane on Karmanos Blvd the west side streets could ease the burden on the east side’s streets, and create an efficient system that the outstanding building deserves.
