City Council Approves Amphitheater Plan Funding

Today the Raleigh City Council approved funding for final plans for the (previously mentioned) downtown amphitheater . The funding will go toward design and noise studies (NIMBYs in Boylan Heights are concerned about noise). The site of the 5,000 seat theater will be on the empty lot adjacent to the convention center, about 5 blocks from the neighborhood.

The amphitheater is anticipated to cost $1.5 million and host events too small for Walnut Creek. Last year it was anticipated that Live Nation, the Walnut Creek operator, would run the smaller downtown facility, however according to the WRAL report today, they have backed out of the deal leaving the facility with no current sponsor.

    When is Eddie Money playing?

Yeah! This makes me very happy. I am really happy that the city is moving forward with this plan.
As for Boylan Heights, I hope the city discovers that the folks there can hear the music and finds a way to charge them for listening. :-) …just kidding. Seriously, I sometimes wonder how a neighborhood can be next to maximum sercurity prison an active railroad track and train station, bars, clubs and restaurants and Western Boulevard and worry about an amphitheatre several blocks away. Frankly, I’d be elated if I lived there and could walk to DT outdoor concerts.

Although I like that it is being built, I do wish they had a sponsor. I like that it is from Meals and Tax and not much in the big sceme but I wish the economy was doing a little better before this vote.

But overall, I am OK. I almost refuse to go to Koka Booth only becuase it seems like I have to walk 2 miles to sit in the back after carrying chairs/etc.

Hey Subway, don’t forget the mosquitos at Koka Booth!
:-) There’s a price to pay for that wooded setting. I personally like that this gives the Triangle an URBAN outdoor concert venue.

Although I consider this a waste of space, it is going to be a temporary solution, so I am fine, provided it doesn’t take business from Lincoln Theater – the latter being an established downtown venue. Sure, Lincoln Theater can’t have 5000 people crammed in it, but the new amphitheater may steal some of the business.

As for the nearby NIMBYs, I wonder how much influence they have on the mayor since he lives in their neighborhood and gets their votes ;) In the future, placing an amphitheater anywhere near Boylan Heights will be a challenge, especially if the PSNC site and Dorothea Drive projects go through – both of them high-density projects. Now is the time to do something, if we really want to place an amphitheater in that location.

Ernest, I imagine the scale of the the venue vis-a-vis the Lincoln Theater will keep them from competing too much.
I wonder what will happen to Koka Booth in Cary with the NC Symphony practically a next door neighbor to this new venue.

Does anyone know exactly what this will look like? I dont have any idea of how tall this tent would be, but it wouldnt block the shimmer wall would it?

  • Subway Scoundrel

I thought Live Nation was providing the tent cover and now they are not involved, is that still in the plan ?
